The last time Pottsville in Minersville met on the gridiron 1933. Looking at today’s outcome I’m guessing Minersville would like to be just as many years until they meet again. Because of Covid 19, two teams who are drastically different in size had to meet. Neighbors and friends, players on both teams we’re forced to play an improbable game. However, it wasn’t all bad for Minersville even though they were outside and out manned.
Minersville got off to a surprising lead when all state wide receiver Ben Davis grabbed a pass from freshman quarterback Connor Schwalm on the third play of the game, made a move and raced 79 to the end zone. The kick after failed but Minersville had an improbable 6-0 lead just minutes into the game. It didn’t last long, but it was a bright moment for the Miners.

The Crimson Tide came out on their first series and marched straight down
the field, scoring on a 1 yard run by snowell. The kick after made the score 7-6 and Pottsville never looked back on their way to a 52-18 win. “Last week we had a lot of penalties and we were able to clean things up a bit” said Crimson Tide head coach Tom McGeoy. “I really liked some of the pass plays that (quarterback Jacze Carabello-Snowell) was able to complete. We had a third and long there and we were able to get a first down so there were a few things we were able to do today that we didn’t last week. If we can complete a few balls it really opens up our run game.”
That run game accounted for over 450 yards on the ground. Using what could have been described as a three headed monster in the backfield, the Crimson Tide used a mixture of speed and power from Amari Dunn,

The power from Walchak and the speed of running back Travontai Davis who led the trio with 139 yards and a pair of tds, one an 84 yard scamper in the second half. “That was one of the things we knew coming in” said McGeoy, “It’s nice, we can run Bobby 3-4 plays in a row then we come back with Davis, really there’s no let down. And Amari kinda found his feet today. If we can get those three guys going we’re in pretty good shape.”

Snowell made it 14-6 on a 1 yard run and a 5 yard run from running back Bobby Walchak gave the Crimson Tide a lead of 21-6 early in the second quarter. Running on emotion, the Miners battled back temporarily when Schwalm grabbed a high snap and scampered right up the middle of the Crimson Tide defense and dashed 45 yards for the score. The two point conversion failed in the Miners would not see the end zone until the end of the fourth quarter. “Connor played well I thought” said Minersville head coach Justin Frantz. “It’s his first start and he didn’t even know he’d get the start until three days ago. I thought he made some nice decisions.

Pottsville would get a field goal from Raeff DiCello to close out the first half scoring, and the Tide picked up where they left off on the first series of the second half. Dunn scored from 10 yards out, then Davis got his second with that 84 yard run. Parrish Mcfarland showed some flashes of speed as a backup in the 4th quarter as well. The Crimson Tide will battle Lehighton next week while the Miners will look to bounce back against Mahanoy Area.
