Schuylkill-Colonial Review, Preview and Predictions for Week-9 !

Tagged under: District 11, News

| October 21, 2022

Week-8 saw a couple upsets if you will with Blue Mountain losing to Saucon Valley 24 to 21, and Bangor taking down Northwestern Lehigh 27 to 21. One game that was somewhat of a surprise, not because of who won or lost but the score, I feel many believed never thought there would be just under 100 points scored between the two 57 to 42, Jim Thorpe falling to Notre Dame-GP. Minersville, who started 4-1, winning four in a row and averaging 28 points a game, have now lost their last 3 games scoring just 8 a game. Not sure what’s happening up there but if they want to still make the playoffs, they’d better figure it out quickly as they now sit tied at 4-4 with 2 other programs, hoping to make the top 4 in the district class 1a rankings. I had the pleasure of covering Palmerton’s game against North Schuylkill last week and it was a dandy as the Spartans fell behind early 14 to 0, but scored 35 unanswered points en-route to a 35 to 21 victory. Watch the highlight below to see my play of the game for the Blue Bombers….

Many games this week could decide seedings for the district playoffs, these games include Northern Lehigh at Jim Thorpe. The Olympians right now sit tied for 5th with 2 other teams, Saucon Valley(3-5) and Tamaqua(3-5), Jim Thorpe defeated Tamaqua a few weeks ago. Marian Catholic looks to keep their playoff hopes alive, tied with 2 teams at (4-4), While the Bulldogs sit at the top of the 1A class undefeated at 8-0. Minersville hosts a struggling Schuylkill Haven(2-6) team.

Palisades Pirates(6-2) at Catasauqua Rough Riders(5-3)
Last Meeting: Pirates won 36 to 0(2020)
Streak: Palisades has won the last 7 dating back to 2014

Key Player(s) to Watch:
Palisades: Steven Lilly(Sr.)-(FB/MLB)
Catasauqua: Ian Juica(Jr.)-(WR/DB), Chad Beller Jr.(Jr.)-(MLB/FB/C)

PREVIEW: Catasauqua enters this matchup winners of their last 5 games, following 3 straight losses to open the 2022 season. During the Rough Riders win streak, they are averaging just under 30 points a game, giving up just 6. Chad Beller Jr. leads the team in tackles with 114 total. For the Pirates, they are led by their senior FB/MLB who has 491 yards rushing, scoring 11 times in total. Palisades comes into this game on a 4 game win streak, averaging 40 points a game, giving up 10. A victory for the Pirates earns them a spot in the DXI playoffs while a loss for the Rough Riders doesn’t eliminate them as they would still hold the #4 spot going into the final week of play.
MY PREDICTION: Rough Riders by 4

Southern Lehigh Spartans(7-1) at Pottsville Area Crimson Tide(4-4)
Last Meeting: Crimson Tide won 42 to 26(2021)
Streak: Pottsville Area has won 1

Key Player(s) to Watch:
Southern Lehigh: Cade Sawyer(Sr.)-(RB/CB), Avery Kosar(Sr.)-(QB/FS)
Pottsville Area: Amaree Bainbridge(Sr.)-(CB/WR), Joey Palko(Sr.)-(TE/DE)

PREVIEW: This year’s seniors for the Spartans were in uniform for the team’s historic run to its first District 11 championship and a berth in the PIAA quarterfinals in 2019. QB-Avery Koser has thrown for more than 1,000 yards, and RB-Cade Sawyer has rushed for over 1000. the CrimsonTide, who sit in the drivers seat in the class 4A DXI rankings on rating points, are tied with Blue Mountain at 4-4, Eagles defeated Pottsville a few weeks ago 17 to 0.
MY PREDICTION: Crimson Tide by 2

Nativity BVM Green Wave(3-5) at Mahanoy Area Golden Bears(4-4)*correct record*
Last Meeting: Green Wave won 36 to 27(2021)
Streak: Nativity BVM has won 1

Key Player(s) to Watch:
Nativity BVM: Samuel Spolski(So.)-(RB/MLB), Noah Dolbin(So.)-(WR/CB)
Mahanoy Area: Louie Frye(So.)-(T/MLB), Ben Manley(So.)-(QB/CB)

PREVIEW: Coming into this game, both team seem to be heading in the opposite direction with Nativity winning their last game over Shenandoah Valley 21 to 6, to snap a 3 game losing streak. The Green Wave sit ranked 6th in DXI class 1A rankings, 1 game behind the Golden Bears, Marian Catholic and Minersville. Nativity averages just under 21 points a game but do give up 25 on average. For Mahanoy Area, they enter the contest losers of their last 4 of 5 games, recently losing to Tri-Valley 21 to 6. The Golden Bears are led by their RB-Colm McGroarty and QB-Ben Manley who combine for 1472 yards on the ground, totaling 21 touchdowns between the two.
MY PREDICTION: Golden Bears by 4

Blue Mountain Eagles(4-4) at Bangor Slaters(6-2)
Last Meeting: Eagles won 35 to 27(2021)
Streak: Blue Mountain has won 1(dating back as far as 2004)

Key Player(s) to Watch:
Blue Mountain: Tyler Miller(Jr.)-(QB), Ian Donohue(Sr.)-(DE/OLB)
Bangor: Ashton Kluska(Sr.)-(RB/MLB), Jacob Weaver(Jr.)-(DE/TE)

PREVIEW: Blue Mountain comes in following a tough loss to Saucon Valley 24 to 21 last week. The rushing attack for the Eagles was held under 100 yards for the first time a while while QB-Miller had one of his best games throwing the ball, for over 150 yards, and two passing touchdowns. Junior Vern Kleckner racked up 16 tackles in the loss for the Eagles. Bangor enters winners of their last 4 of games averaging 28 points in those games, giving up a whopping 18. The Slaters won a very important game last week over a very good NWL Tigers squad 27 to 21, piling up over 225 yards rushing in the process. With that win, the Slaters sit in the #3 spot in the Class 4A DXI rankings at 6-2 behind Becahi(4-4), and ACC(5-4). The winner of this game will pretty much solidify their place in the DXI Playoffs.
