Williams Valley and Mahanoy Area battled all night long, exchanging punches like two heavyweight boxers. In the end, the Vikings threw the last punch and escaped with a 49-41 win. Alex Achenbach continued his tear through the season with 316 yards on the ground, scoring 6 times, one being a td pass to Kian Krzyzanowski.
Mahanoy’s Colm McGroarty also had a big night running for 201 yards and 3 scores while passing for another.
Williams Valley jumped out to a 28-7 lead and maintained a 20 point lead at the break, leading the Bears 34-14. McGroarty closed the gap on the first drive of the second half, but Krzyzanowski shut that door by returning the kickoff 84 yards making it a 41-21 game.
The Bears scored two more times to get within a td with 7:51 left in the fourth, but they had no answer for Achenbach who punched one in from the 26. Ethan Manley hauled in a 16 yard pass from McGroarty with 2:25 left to close within 8, but the Vikings held on for the win.
The Bears will look to rebound vs Tri-Valley, Williams Valley faces Marian Catholic.
