Jr. Nafis Smith helps Franklin down Central

The Electrons of Benjamin Franklin headed up Broad Street to take on the Lancers of Central High School in a key divisional game. The Lancers came into the game 0-3-1 while the Electrons entered the game 1-2.  Franklin prior to this game had scored a combined 21 points in 3 games while giving up 51 points. This game the Electrons were able to establish the line of scrimmage led by the leadership of new starting So. QB Robert Bembrey-Thomas who went a perfect 6-6 for 134 yards and 2 TDs while also adding a rushing score.  Jr. RB Nafis Smith also enjoyed a breakout game rushing 11 times for 153 yards and 3 TDs on the ground. Defensively Sr. DB John Bohannan, and Jr. LB Hyseem Zimmerman posted interceptions to pace the defense. Coach Lorrel McCook said the 3 defensive interceptions by his team helped swing the momentum to fuel the route. I asked him what players are deserving of recruiting attention and he replied “Cinseir Lambert, Yazid Thompson are definitely flying under the radar and would be great additions to any program looking for linemen. Especially on the defensive side of the ball.” Lambert is 6-2 285 and plays OG and DT. He projects as a DL and should be fielding letters and calls from FCS and D2 coaches. Yazid goes 6-4 265 with decent mobility. He projects as a DT but I could easily see him be groomed as a OT as he only needs to add a solid 25-30lbs.  Yazid recorded a sack, 1 forced fumble, 3 QB rushes and even managed a TD on a fake FG attempt. Next up is a pivotal league game at home against Boys Latin who suffered a close defeat to Mastery Charter North. The winner of this game will hold 3rd place in the division between Frankford and Mastery North.  Up next for Central is a grueling trip to Frankford who is 5-0 and have yet to give up a point this season.

Sidebar: Former Ben Franklin star QB Freshman Cahsid Raymond who now starts and stars at Mansfield University on their spring football team had a homecoming this same evening as his Mounties traveled into Philadelphia to take on Chestnut Hill College. Cahshid shined throwing for 171 yards & 2 TDs while also rushing for 124 yards and a score in a 31-14 win.
