Benjamin Franklin overcomes Boys Latin 18-14 @BFHSNews @BoysLatinFB

Nafis Smith would cap off the game’s first scoring drive on a 2-yard run to give Benjamin Franklin a 6-0 lead with 8:30 left in the opening quarter. It would not take Boys Latin long to respond with their first score with Nehemiah Nelson making a 30-yard catch to lock things up at six, with 3:27 left in the highly competitive quarter. Ben Franklin would get the last big play of the quarter with Kari Griffin getting Hassan Taylor for a loss of 2-yards. After just one quarter as early as it might have been I was under the conclusion that these two teams were pretty evenly matched.

Using some great work by his offensive line and some John Riggins like power Symier Dickens Jr. picked up 15-yards to give Ben Franklin a big first down just:29 seconds into quarter number two. Jahiem Oats picked up a sack on Nafis Smith that netted a 3-yard loss. On a 35-yard catch by #80 Ben Franklin was able to take the 12-6 lead, with 7:59 remaining in the half. Smith would throw a pick to Jaydan Parker to bring Uncle Mo. back of Boys Latin side with a little over seven minutes left in the half, right after they had turned the ball over on a fumble. A third straight turnover took place when Samir Corbin Sr got a pick on a Boys Latin pass. I am not for sure but it looked like Corbin also recovered the earlier fumble. Defense ruled the rest of the half. Yazid Winthrow-Thomas and Jamar Basketbill each recorded a sack for Ben Franklin, while Nehemiah Nelson got a pick for Boys Latin.

The 2nd half would go much like the first with the defense playing the role of the King, while the offense was a mere pawn trying to survive. A bad snap led to Quadir Dixon sacking Smith. Then on fourth and two for Ben Franklin Smith was stopped short when Faheem Cater made a big play. At the 9:34 mark, it would be the Ben Franklin defense that came up big when Derrick Lane put a bone-crushing hit on the Boys Latin ball carrier resulting in a 5-yard loss. The last 6:03 of the quarter would see #9 from Boys Latin pick up 20-yards as he broke three tackles on the way. He recovered nicely from the 5-yard loss that he suffered earlier. This became a 14-12 game when Jibril Jones found pay dirt from 7-yards out.

To start out the final stanza Jones blasted off to a gain of 11-yards. Then it was a 23-yard catch by Nelson who used a nice spin move then broke two tackles on his way to the gain. A sack by Cinseir Lambert aided in putting the breaks on the drive.

Tymir Mayberry would use the hard work from his aggressive offensive line to score on a 3-yard run to give Ben Franklin the 18-14 lead, with 1:45 left. Securing the win with a pass break up on fourth and thirteen for Ben Franklin was Bivins.
