I know most of you have heard of Seven player High School Football Leagues, especially in towns with small populations. Well Bishop McDevitt took it down to another level. Can you say “TWO MAN FOOTBALL ? ” The duo of QB/DB Lonnie Rice who is headed to the University of Buffalo and RB/DB Akrie Lilley were the only two players to run the football in the Lancers 9-8 victory of the West Catholic Burrs.
Ironically it was Rice’s 11 yard TD pass to Ty Tindal with 6:17 left in the fourth quarter that produced the games final 6 points. Rice ran the ball 17 times for 106 yards while 5’9″ sophomore Lilley carried the pigskin 25 times for 92 yards. Rice did pass 9 times completing 4 for 77 yards. West Catholic scored their only points late in the first stanza when QB Zaire Hart-Hawkins scored on a 1 yard sneak. Nelson Mensah ran for the 2 point conversion and the Burrs offense would get no closer than the McDevitt 17 yard line late in the third quarter.
Hawkins completed a 30 yard pass to Troy Athill and after a 5 yard infraction against the Lancers and a 2 yard gain by K’saan Green the ball arrived at the 17. On the next play West was called for a holding penalty from the spot of the foul which was the McDevitt 24. As a result the ball was placed back at the 34 yard line . A gain of three yards on second down followed by an incomplete pass and a 5 yard penalty saw West facing a fourth and 29 from the 36. Hawkins fourth down pass was incomplete as the Burrs would see the ball for just 5 offensive plays in the fourth quarter. On fourth down from the McDevitt 42 Hawkins threw the ball deep down the right sideline but Rice tipped the ball away from the intended receiver which iced the game for the Lancers.
