District 12 Philly Public & Catholic League Week 5 Recap

District 12 Week 5 recap:

Lower Moreland 14 Vaux 8: Lower Moreland who had struggled defensively in their previous 4 games stepped up big time surrendering only 8 points to Vaux.

Highland Regional (NJ) 38 Academy at Palumbo 0: Highland Regional would dominate from start to finish churning out 394 yards of total offense, passing for 232 yards & 5 TDs and also rushing for 162 yards and 1 TD.

Thomas Edison 14 Kipp-DuBois 0: The Owls scored once each half for the victory margin. They currently have 3 wins on the season and you have to go back to 2007 for the last season in which they won more than 2 games when they went 4-7.

Northeast 56 Olney 6: The Vikings put on an offensive clinic with RB David Akpuru leading the way. He would score 3 rushing touchdowns in the 1st quarter for a 21-0 lead. He’d score 2 more TDs to finish the game with 5 rushing TDs. With under a minute left in the first half Olney would get on the board with a 35-yard score to go into the half 35-6. Northeast would utilize their depth to score 3 more 2nd half scores to finish the game.

West Philadelphia 34 Central 27: The Speedboys were able to utilize the passing game to get back on the winning side. Sr. QB Nyeem Shubert was efficient and effective going 6/9 122 yards while Sr. RB Zamir Poteat had a school record 294 rushing yards & 4 TDs in the win. Zamir also recorded 24 receiving yards. West would jump out to a 12-0 1st quarter lead and extend the lead to 20-6 at the half. The 3rd quarter would see both teams score and end with West leading 28-14.

School of the Future 16 South Philadelphia 6: The Firebirds despite being a small school found a way to sustain long drives & get a great road win over Southern.

Harriton 23 Roxborough 6: The Indians fell to 2-3 after falling at District 1 Harriton on the road.

Abraham Lincoln 54 Simon Gratz 0: The RailSplitters earned their first victory of the season with a shutout dominating win over the Gratz Bulldogs. Lincoln’s Sr. QB Gabe Smalley would account for 6 TDs, with 5 coming via passing and to add to his resume he notched a rushing TD as well.

Martin Luther King 33 Boys Latin 12: The MLK Cougars dominated this game at the line of scrimmage which led to them winning going away in a very physical game.

Marple Newtown 48 Mastery Charter North 7: The Tigers jumped out early and never looked back over the Pumas. Marple Newtown improved to 5-1 while Mastery fell to 2-3.

Lansdale Catholic 21 Archbishop Carroll 14: The Crusaders evened their record to 3-3 grinding their way to a road win at Carroll.  QB Cole Meehan stepped up huge going 12/24 for 138 yards & 2 TD passes. Yeboa Cobbold would catch passes for 65 yards and both TD passes. For the Patriots QB Jay Boyd would throw 12/24 for 181 yards and 2 TDs.

Benjamin Franklin 36 Overbrook 6: The Electrons are winners of back-to-back divisional games as they ran past Overbrook behind star athlete Vernon Young’s 3 total TDs (1 receiving, 2 rushing) and 180 total yards.

Neumann Goretti 22 Cardinal O’Hara 7: The Saints would get on the scoreboard first with a 28-yard rushing TD by Terrence Page which was followed by a Mekhai Wharton 2-point conversion for the early 8-0 lead. Terrence would add another rushing score this time going 55 yards to the endzone and Ahmaj Gowens would add the conversion to give the Saints a 16-0 lead late in the 2nd quarter. The Lions would add a TD before halftime to cut the lead to 16-7. With under 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter Terrence would finish off the game scoring with a 9-yard rushing score to go up 22-7 which would ultimately be the final score.

Belmont Charter18 Frankford 12: The Tigers despite being a small school (AA) would find a way to fend off a pesky Pioneers team with stingy defense.

Imhotep 42 John Bartram 0: The Panther’s Sr. QB Mikel Davis would rush for 60 yards & then throw for 215 yards & 2 TDs leading Tep to a resounding road win at Bartram. Jr. RB Jabree Wallace-Coleman would add 88 rushing yards & 2 rushing TDs along with an 80-yard punt return for a score. Defensively Sr. DL Jahsear Whittington (Pittsburgh) notched 2 sacks amongst his 3 total tackles while Jr. Kahir Hood recorded an interception and Sr. DL David Johnson recovered a fumble.

La Salle College 38 Calvert Hall 35: The Explorers earned a victory on the road in comeback fashion as they fought back from a 20-7 deficit in the 2nd quarter to take a 26-21 lead into the half. They’d fall behind but stud QB Gavin Sidwar would fine Eddie Sutter for the winning TD with just 1:37 remaining in the 4th quarter.

Bonner-Prendie 30 Archbishop Ryan 15: The Friars got a big game from RB Isaiah Sessions who ran for a 70-yard TD early in the game. The game would be competitive in the first half with Bonner holding a 16-7 lead. After a scoreless 3rd quarter, the game would feature Ryan getting 8 points before Bonner slammed the door with 2 scores to complete the scoring on the day for the final 15-point win margin.

St. Joes’s Prep 61 Archbishop Wood 0: The Hawks scored early, often and despite a running clock still managed to score 20 second half points with their backups in. David Washington would score a 43-yard receiving TD and return a punt for score in the 1st quarter. Ramier Hardy blocked a punt & Louie Amiano returned it for a score as the Hawks jumped out to a 21-0 1st quarter lead. Samaj Jones would toss another TD pass this time a 54-yard bomb to Brandon Rehmann (WVU) for an 28-0 lead with 7:46 left in the 2nd quarter. Isiah West would add a 3-yard score to extend the lead to 35-0 with 4:19 left in the 2nd quarter. Back up QB Jack O’Connor would check in late in the 2nd quarter and toss a 25-yard score to Jamir Rowe to extend the lead at the half to 41-0. 3rd string QB Tre Henning would also get in on the join in the fun adding a 45-yard TD pass to Jamir Rowe.

Conwell-Egan 26 West Catholic 0: The Eagles defense stifled WC’s offense. Tim Gipli, Colin Walker and Justin Layon all recorded interceptions. Gipli would add a receiving touchdown while Sam Cooper, Sincere Fairey and Mentorl Zoryea would all record TDs for the Eagles. For the Burrs QB Kal-El Durham would rush for 47 yards and Arenas Amaker would rush for 71 yards.

Roman Catholic 33 Father Judge 25: Roman would jump out to a 7-0 lead behind QB Semaj Beals 12-yard TD pass to Xavier Kingcade with under a minute remaining in the 1st quarter. Louis Gaddy would recover a fumble with 11 minutes left in the 2nd quarter deep in Judge territory and Dazhaun Hopkins would rush for a 10-yard rushing touchdown. Judge would get on the board with a 24-yard FG to cut the lead to 13-3 with 7 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Judge would force a Roman fumble and toss a score reduce the lead to 13-10. Roman would extend the lead at halftime to 20-10 on Xavier Kingcade’s 7-yard rushing score to get the lead back to 10. Judge would come out the half put together a solid drive to cut the lead to 20-17. Semaj Beals answered back with a 64-yard TD pass to Trey Woodland to extend the lead to 26-17. Beals would toss another 34-yard TD pass to Jah Jah Boyd to get the lead up to 33-17 with 11 minutes left in the 4th quarter. The Crusaders wouldn’t give up and quit, Nymeir Appling would catch a TD pass to reduce the lead to 33-25. The scoring would conclude with that touchdown.

George Washington 40 Kensington 0: The Eagles would come out and put together a hell of a game as Jahiem Bennett scored 4 TDs and notched 2 interceptions in the first half alone. Jamar Coleman also started with an interception and 3 passes deflections along with 2 tackles on defense. He also contributed offensively with a 40-yard reception.
