Frankfor prepares for their game with South Philly

If offense was your preference on a very hot Saturday afternoon at  Legendary Frankford High School Stadium in Philadelphia  then perhaps you should have stayed home and watched  College Football.  Frankford won the contest because of their ability to throw the football just good enough to capture  the win .  The Pioneers  led at the half 7-0 scoring on a 15 yard pass from Jeremiah Morrell to Christian St. George.  St. George appeared to be out of bounds when he snagged the ball near the pylon but the official said that the receiver hit the pylon , while most on the sideline where the play developed thought the defender Taurus Lewis hit the orange post and that St. George  had neither foot on the field of play. As far as  offense in the first half let me throw these numbers at you.  Frankford rushed 13 times for minus 9 yards and passed 8 of 10 for 57  yards which added up to 48 yards of total offense. The Rams were even worse.  Running 8 for minus 17 and passing 3 of 7 for 29 yards summing up to 12 yards of total offense.  The tone for the second half was set right at the outset when Frankford’s Jaahamm Mungen  recovered an onside kick to start the third quarter.  A 20 yard pass from Morrell to Kaseem Perry and a personal foul by Southern at the end of the play saw the ball placed at the Rams 12.  Three plays later Jameel Agard-Rogers ran the ball into the end zone from the 3 yard line.  Abdullah Kamagate’s PAT kick gave the home team a 14-0 lead very early in the second half.  Southern went three and out on their next possession.  St. George  returned Southern’s punt 44 yards but a block in the back infraction reduced the return to 27 yards.  On second down from South Philly’s 44 the Pioneers set up a perfect screen pass and Khavon Walker went the distance untouched at the 7:38 mark of the third period. Kamagate kicked his third PAT and the old stadium scoreboard read 21-0. The TD throw to Walker would be Morrell’s final completion of the afternoon. He attempted just one more pass and his final line read 12-16- 131- 2 TD’s. Incredibly Frankford would not make another first down the rest of the day after the touchdown pass. They would score their final TD on a 43 yard interception return by Cordell Patterson with 4:34 left on the fourth quarter clock. Other than Morrell’s pedestrian passing numbers  all other offense statistics were pathetic for both squads.  Frankford officially rushed the pigskin 19 times for a total of TWO YARDS .  The Rams were even  uglier.  22 for MINUS FOUR YARDS.  Southern QB Fahtene Pailin passed 6-16 – 38 . He threw 2 additional interceptions.  Patterson had a second and Mungen  picked the other.  Southern punter Michael Fayemi tried his hand at passing out of punt formation but only numbered 2-2 – 22.  The 60 yards of total passing yards along with  minus 4 rushing yards showed a total offensive number of 56 yards for the entire game.  Ouch !  The Pioneers final number read 133.

Obviously both defenses played exceptionally well with Southern’s Sr. DE  Isaiah Pierce notching the most tackles with 8 and reeking havoc all day in the Pioneer backfield . Pierce had 3 TFL’s along with 2 sacks.  Pailin who  was chased by the Pioneer’s the entire game and rushed 15 times for zero yards. He was sacked or thrown for losses on 8 of his 15 chances.  The Frankford defense was paced by Amar Alquza with 7 tackles , 3 TFL’s and 2 sacks. Ruben Destin 6 -3 TFL’s- 2 sacks, Fateen McFadden 5-2- sack, Mungen 5, and Devon Francis 4- TFL  also contributed.   J.J. Johnson made his 2019 debut for the Rams after suffering an injury midway last season. The big DL/OL made 6 take downs with 2 resulting into a loss. Dennis Howard III made 5 tackles with a TFL.   Others swarming the ball included Foday Keita, Mike Fayemi, Taurus Lewis, Q’ Adair Overton and Antonio Madden  .

Notes: Each team recorded 6 first downs. Southern was penalized 9 times for 72 yards while Frankford was flagged 7 for 78.  The Rams punted 2- 19.0 avg.  Pioneers 3- 30.0 avg. Frankford played a 5 man front that included Mungen who also jumped to linebacker, Camryn Leach, Marcus Henderson, Alquza and Francis. Alex Rodriguez and Michael Garcia played linebacker while Patterson, Blessing HarrisHorn , Yaseem Cruz-Davis and Marcus Serrano protected the secondary.  Frankford improved its record to 2-1 in league play while Southern fell to 1-2.
