La Salle Bounces Back With a Dominating Performance Over Roman Catholic

After a tough loss to St. Joe’s Prep two weeks ago, there were some questions about how La Salle might respond. Would the defeat deflate the team, or would it be motivation to return to the field improved? On a sunny and chilly afternoon at Wissahickon High School, the Explorers showed why they are still one of the best teams in the state with a commanding 32-6 over Roman Catholic.

The La Salle defensive front seven dominated, forcing an incredible seven straight three-and-outs. The big front continually stuffed the run and had Roman quarterback Jayden Pope scrambling and rushing throws all game. The Explorers’ defense was so smothering, in fact, that the Roman offense didn’t gain a first down until the second half.

The La Salle offense was clicking early. After a short run for a touchdown by Tim Mehlman, the Explorers scored again on a beautiful 50-yard strike on a pass from Gavin Daly rolling out to his right to the sure-handed Justin Machita. The duo would connect once again during the next drive to give La Salle a 20-0 lead early in the first quarter. Both players surpassed 100 yards passing and receiving respectively during the first frame of the game.

But La Salle wasn’t finished adding on in the first quarter, as the defense put points on the board as well. A blocked punt by Sean McFadden out of the back of the endzone added a safety for two more, extending the Explorers lead to 22-0. A 37-yard field goal by Santiago Sturla added three as the teams went to the half with La Salle leading 25-0.

During the second half, Roman quarterback Jayden Pope began to settle in, connecting on a few long passes and leading a drive capped off by a rushing touchdown by Shemar Ellis.

But the Explorers offensive line continued to open holes allowing for the rushing attack to control the clock with running back Sam Brown adding a touchdown of his own.

La Salle moves to 4-1 on the season, eyeing a huge game against Archbishop Wood next week. Roman Catholic falls to 0-3.
