Owen Johnson shines in LaSalle victory

La Salle took down Saint Joes Prep 24-14 to win the PCL 6A Championship Saturday afternoon.

Here were my thoughts heading into the game.

The game kicked off, and it was Prep ball, as they elected to receive after winning the toss. Khy Billups rushed on the first play, followed by an Alston Frisbey reception, but this was not enough to get a first down, and after a Charlie Foulke sack, the Prep had to punt.

La Salle came out for their first drive, gaining positive yardage little by little. La Salle finally found some breakthroughs, getting huge chunks of yards in the passing game and setting up a scoring play. From 18 yards out, Gavin Sidwar found Owen Johnson for a touchdown, putting La Salle on the board first and giving them a 7-0 lead over the Prep.

The Prep got the ball back for their second drive, and just like the first, it would end in a 3-and-out. Saint Joe’s Prep tried to push the run game, but it did not pay off, and the Hawks punted away once more.

Despite the obvious momentum trending in favor of La Salle, they could not capitalize. Owen Johnson continued to be involved, hauling in a reception before La Salle had to punt away back to the Prep. On the Punt, there was a flag thrown on the Explorers, which set up great field position for the Prep.

Saint Joe’s Prep started in the red zone, and it only took a few plays for them to find the end zone. Multiple rushes and passes set up the scoring pass, Alston Frisbey from Charlie Foulke, and the game was tied up with only 11 seconds left in the first quarter.

Neither team would get anything rolling on the next four drives of the half, and even with La Salle driving all the way down to the two-yard line, they didn’t get any points. 3 punts and 1 fumble in 4 drives.

Lasalle got the ball back following a Prep punt and went right to work, with Gavin Sidwar finding Desmond Ortiz on a passing play that put the Explorers on the 8-yard line. Sidwar finds Owen Johnson yet again for another receiving touchdown. La Salle leads 14-7 with 25 seconds left in the half.

The Prep kneel out the remainder of the half, and they trail 14-7.

Here are my thoughts at halftime.

La Salle came out of the first half driving with huge catches from Owen Johnson and Joey Obrien as well as quality rushes from Azhir Nelson, but the Prep defense held strong, holding the Explorers to 3 points. 17-7 La Salle

The Prep was determined not to go out without a fight, as receptions from Jett Harrison and Alston Frisbey led the Prep down into the Red Zone. Charlie Foulke found his man in the end zone. It’s Jett Harrison. Harrison made a tightly contested grab for a huge touchdown, and just like that, the Prep were right back in it.

La Salle got the ball back and began driving, with Owen Johnson and JP Oates making huge plays and leading the Explorers all the way down to the 5-yard line. Sidwar took off running from the 5 and found the endzone for a La Salle score. The Explorers were making everything work and could not be stopped.

Saint Joe’s Prep needed a score, but unfortunately, they did not get that.  The Hawks were moving down the field at a high pace before a deflection from JP Oates on a Charlie Foulke Pass landed right into the arms of Colton McAleer.

Now, all La Salle needed to do was chew the clock in order to win this ball game. La Salle found themselves on fourth down multiple times, but a huge encroachment penalty on the Prep gave them a first down, and on the second fourth, Gavin Sidwar faked the punt and found JP Oates for the potential game-sealing catch.

After a few plays, La Salle punted the ball away, but it was not enough time for the Prep, and the game was over. 24-14 in favor of the Explorers and the new PCL 6A Champions.

After the game, I got to chat with La Salles Owen Johnson and Gavin Sidwar.
