Salesianum from Delaware
stretches out before Saturday’s 3 PM
Kickoff at Mastery Charter

Upon arrival at Ben Johnson Memorial Stadium in the Germantown section of Philadelphia I noticed several young men wearing Mastery North Charter football jersey’s but in civilian clothes on the Pumas sideline. When I went over to head coach John Davidson to make sure I had an updated roster, he quickly grabbed the roster from me and crossed out the numbers 4,5 and 6. I had seen Mastery a few weeks ago and those three numbers had impacted the game.

Number 4- Suhail Gillard was the leading rusher, 5- Justin Earl-Porter the leading receiver and 6-Jeremiah Edrise-Porter was the quarterback. Davidson was hoping for some of his younger players to step up but knew it would be a tough task against Salesianum High School from Wilmington Delaware. Last year the Sallies made it all the way to their classifications State Championship Game only to lose to Sussex Central. The Pumas then found out why after being thumped 35-0.

The first state squad had possession of the ball on 6 drives.  They scored on all but one and that was a result of a lost fumble. There was nothing scientific about their approach as they went old school; running traps ,counters , straight dives and a few sweeps. The word “Pass” must not be in their vocabulary. The Sallies ran the ball 35 times for 201 yards with a 5.7 average yards per carry and 5 touchdowns. They were led on the ground by Joe Montooth who numbered 12-65-2 TD’s and Liam Marra 10-48-2 TD’s  They did attempt 3 passes. As for the home team their offensive numbers were ugly.  They rushed 22 times for just 3 yards, passed for 16 yards  for a total offense of 19 yards. Ouch!

Mastery’s punting game gave the visitors excellent field position all afternoon booting the pigskin 5 times for a weak 18.6 average yards per punt. As a result the Sallies began every possession but one in Mastery territory, the other started at the 50. Mastery known for its speed couldn’t take advantage of it even on kickoff returns. Sallies kicker Hunter Simmons who was successful on all 5 of his PAT attempts , kicked off 6 times with 5 landing in the end zone. The other was fielded at the one yard but would have gone into the end zone a if the returner decided not to catch the ball.  One could easily see why Salesianum’s strength is the run . Their starting offensive line featured 5’10 215 lbs center Daniel Stradley, guards Patrick Methlie 6’3 260  and Jack Roddy 5’10” 215 . The tackles were Ethan Walker 6’5” 250 and Ryan Haines 6’4″ 260. Tight End Jack Healy 6’3” also helped with the blocking.  Healy who also plays linebacker had 6 tackles with 3 TFL’s and a sack.

Some numbers worth mentioning for Mastery were on the defensive side of the ball. Dorian Douglas registered 8 tackles and a TFL. Trailing were Gashawn Moody 7, Zahir Clark 6 and Daishawn Tillghman with 5 tackles. Justin Hall, Quamyre Blue and David Stewart all had TFL’s.
