Zaire Smith had the play of the day
The Speedboys escaped their first spring game with a 14-12 win over the Electrons of Ben Franklin on a cool, windy Friday afternoon. “I know it’s been a long time, and a win is a win, but we have to play better than that” said West Philly head coach Franklin Steed after a talk with his team. “We’ll get this fixed though, I’m proud of my guys for fighting.”
West jumped out to a quick lead when an Electron muffed a punt and the Speedboys recovered at the 10. Three plays later Kentrell Dancy hauled in a pass the went through the defenders hands and bounced off his own helmet. Here’s what it looked like in slow motion because this reporter apparently forgot how to operate his camera:

The point after missed leaving West with a 6-0 lead early in the game. That would be as close to scoring as either team would come until late in the second quarter. “Any time we get the opportunity to play, especially with the pandemic, it’s just good to see the kids play” said Electrons head coach Lorell McCook. “But it’s apparent that we are young and have a lot of rust to shake off.”
They managed to shake some of that dust off on a nice run to the outside by sophomore athlete Nafis Smith. The 4 yard td run came after a very short punt into the wind, which was a factor in the game. The point after for Franklin also failed leaving the score tied at 6

It took just one play for the Speedboys to respond. After getting nice field position on the kick return, Rivera launched the ball down the sidelines for a one play, 35 yard td to Zaire Brown. Rivera got the 2 point conversion which turned out to be the game winner.
Following the halftime break, things went downhill for both teams as turnovers dominated the second half until, with 1;25 left to play, Smith again put the Electrons on the board with a one yard run. West snuffed out the game tying attempt and recovered the onside kick.
West faces Boys Latin next Saturday and the Electrons face Roxborough on Friday.
