Coach Howanitz gives the winning speech to his team
Last year the Cougars came to Berwick and upended them in the playoffs. Something few teams can say as it’s a hostile environment and can be somewhat intimidating. Cougar Head Coach George Howanitz says that helped his team tonight: “Well this is a tough place to win but we came in here last year and did it, that experience helped us tonight”. The Cougars certainly weren’t intimidated, jumping out to a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter and 21-0 by halftime enroute to a 35-7 pounding of the Berwick Bulldogs. “Any time you come here and get away with a win its an accomplishment, they’re a good team” said Howanitz.
Quarterback Janasah Boone scored three different ways, running, receiving and throwing earning him the PAFootballNews.Com Player of the Game. Boone accounted for 195 yards and the three scores, throwing for 115. But it was probably his receiving score that meant the most. With just seconds left in the first half, Boone handed the ball to Mason Kordish who gently leaned back and lobbed the ball back to the qb. Boone went in giving the Cougars a comfortable lead at the halfway mark. “Our coaches, they trusted us and that’s something and I threw it to the best athlete on the field”.

For Berwick it was another story. “We just couldn’t stop going backwards” said Berwick coach Frank Sheptock. Berwick committed 13 penalties to the tune of 165 yards. On the first play of the game Own Shoemaker broke through the right side and scamperd 50 yards to the 32, but it was called back. That was pretty much the tone of the game for the Dawgs.
The Cougars set the tone early when they got a big first down on a flea flicker, then Yanasah scampered to the 8.

Berwicks again committed another penalty that cost them early when a personal foul gave the Cougars new life on their next drive. That led to Boones second td of the night, a 28 yard scoring pass to Dylan Howanitz making it 14-0 early.
Berwick started the second half looking like the #1 ranking they held. Teagan Wilk gave the Dawgs good field position on the kickoff, and Shoemaker finished the drive with a 7 yard run to make it 21-7. “We knew they were going to bring the energy and we just had to hold on and play our game” said Kordish of the score.
Not only did they hold on, they stepped on the gas. Kordish, who finished with 21 carries for 116 yards and two total touchdowns for Valley View, and Boone closed out the scoring for the Cougars. Valley View moves on to play Western Wayne next week while the Dawgs will try to rebound against Hazleton.
