After a 0-4 start in 2024, Berwick has rattled off four successive wins to start 2025.
It wasn’t all pretty for Berwick, especially early. On the opening drive, Hazleton marched down the field with ease. For just the second time all year, Berwick trailed.
Berwick, however, would not blink for the next 45 minutes. RB Ty’meere Wilkerson was once again Berwick’s driving factor. The speedster was able to bust off breakaway runs with ease. When speaking on Wilkerson, Berwick Head Coach CJ Curry said, ” Our run game was dominant. Whenever #5(Wilkerson) gets the ball in his hands, he can hit a home run.” Curry added that he felt Wilkerson could’ve broken his own single-game rushing record if he had played the full game. Wilkerson finished with over 290 yards in just three quarters of play. Curry also praised his offensive line for tonight’s performance, ” We got a great push up front all night, it was great to see.”
Tonight, Hazleton fell victim to the stifling Berwick defense. After this contest, Berwick is allowing just over seven points per game, a stark improvement from their 20 ppg allowed last year. Curry mentioned that when Wilkerson is running like he ran tonight, it makes it much easier for the defense to play freely. After the opening drive, Hazleton was unable to establish a consistent rhythm. QB Freddy Corrado wasn’t given much time before the Berwick defensive line was suffocating him. The main offensive output for Hazleton came from Sophomore RB Xavier Heck. Throughout the game, Heck caused problems for the Berwick defense, as he was able to find some nice gaps for big gains. On those drives, Hazleton typically would stall out, giving the ball back to Berwick. It was a clean game for Hazleton, with few penalties or turnovers; they just couldn’t execute.
The biggest improvement from the aforementioned Berwick defense? Tackling. 2024 Berwick would consistently allow big plays to be had based on their ability to wrap up. That doesn’t happen to 2025 Berwick. Through four games, the Berwick defense has been asked to execute open-field tackling. They’ve been up to the task. Berwick doesn’t just feel like a much more disciplined team; they look the part as well. The improved tackling seems to be the largest catalyst for the elite defense.
For Hazleton, this loss puts them at 1-3 for the season. After a disappointing season a year ago, the Cougars have continued this slump into 2025. Hazleton will travel to take on a struggling Wyoming Valley West squad next Friday.
With the win, Berwick improves to 4-0, tying their 2024 win total. For CJ Curry, this win gives him a winning record as the Head Coach of Berwick (8-7). As Berwick takes on a struggling Hanover team next weekend, all roads point to an undefeated match-up between Berwick and Wyoming Area on September 27th.
