Ryan Petrosky hit the mark when needed late in the game

“We played 39 minutes of uncharacteristic football. Not terrible football.” Standing on crutches (more on that later) following his teams come from behind 20-17 win over undefeated  Lake-Lehman, Crestwood head coach Ryan Arcangeli described the play that kept the Comets from getting in the endzone earlier. “Dumb penalties. But in a game like this ya gotta learn to control your emotions. We had some young guys who weren’t doing that, but then at halftime we just told them ya gotta stop beating ourselves. We killed ourselves because we controlled the game between the 20s, we had excellent pass protection, but ya gotta play the whole time, until the bell rings.”

Early on, that bell didn’t look like it was going to ring in Crestwoods favor. This battle between two heavyweights started out as a slugfest with the entire first quarter consisting of just one drive per team. Taking the opening kick, the Comets moved the ball to the Knights 39 but two huge penalties drove them back deep into their own territory where they were eventually forced to punt.

It wasn’t a bad punt, pinning Lake-Lehman at their own 13. Quarterback Ethan Adams drove his team methodically, with a nice mix of runs between himself and Ryan Eiden. Then he went to the air finding Jake Trumbower for a nice gain to the 7. Adams finished the drive on his feet to put the Black Knights up 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Crestwood, on the next drive, again got deep into Lehman territory but couldn’t convert on a fourth down play. The Knights returned the favor giving the ball back at their 47. Once again, Crewstood moved the ball but 2 more penalties killed their drive. The second half started much the same. Lake-Lehman was forced to punt and Crestwood moved the ball deep into Lehman territory but missed a 35 yard field goal. That seemed to spark the Lake-Lehman offense.

Adams took over on the next drive, showing why he’s one of the best QBs in District 2. After first connecting with Trumbower for 5 yards, Adams ran the ball 7 times for 75 yards, (which included a 5 yard facemask) calling his own number to finish the drive putting Lake-Lehman up 14-0 with 93 seconds left in the third quarter.

Then with 6 minutes left and having just stopped Lake-Lehman on another fourth down attempt, the Comet offense exploded. On third down, Ryan Petrosky launched an up ball and Paul Feisel went high, outreaching a defender to haul in a 32 yard gain to the 9 of Lake-Lehman. Petrosky crossed the goal line with 4:44 left to play making it a 14-7 game.

The Comets defense then came to life, forcing a quick 3 and out giving Crestwood the ball at  their 40. Then, it happened again. Now racing the clock, Petrosky launched another jump ball and once again Feisel made the play.

“Big plays are crushing, they’re hard for defenses to rebound from” said Arcangeli.  “Especially a team with such a great defense like Lake-Lehman. Paul made a great play. He said “coach I got this, I can go get this ball. And he did.” Once again, Crestwood was on the 9 yard line. This time, Petrosky found Brenden DeMarzo for the game tying score with just 34 seconds to play.

Lake Lehman had the first crack in OT, but had to settle for a 35 yard field goal to go up 17-14. Crestwood lined up for their chance and on third down, Jimmy Hawley, who had just punished the Knights line with short, crashing dives for chunks of yards all game long, took the hand off, sprinted left and the rest as they say, is history.

“They made more plays than us” said Lehman head coach Jerry Gilski. “They got a couple jump balls there, our kid had excellent coverage they just got it.”

As for Coach Arcangeli and those crutches: Well, in the excitement that was the win he went out to celebrate with his team and, jumping high in the air he came down hard and as he said “I sprinted, jumped and my body wasn’t ready to stop. 100% gone. I’ll be injured all day long. The adrenaline will continue to pump”.
