Crestwood survives against Berwick

After an amazing 13-2 season a year ago , Crestwood finds themselves in a much different predicament in 2023. The Comets started 0-3 , but since have won 4 in their last 5 to put their record even at 4-4 entering the Friday night matchup against the Berwick Bulldogs.

For Berwick , they face an uncertainty of making the District 2 4A playoffs. The Bulldogs currently claim the last available spot in the bracket as of week 8. Although there is a chance Berwick can make it without getting another win , they would be much more comfortable grabbing a win in one of these next two weeks.

As the rain poured down on Comet Stadium , Berwick got on the board with this Ethan Lear TD run

It was apparent early that this would be a high scoring game. With the extremely wet conditions, the team that made the least mistakes and who ran the ball better was going to be the winner.

Crestwood went right back after the opening Berwick score , the Extra point was no good and a few minutes in, it was 7-6.

After a turnover by Berwick, Crestwood was on the hunt again. Jason Swank took a 8-yard carry into the endzone, Crestwood now led.

A Berwick punt and Crestwood took advantage. On their first play of the drive they took a run to the house. Crestwood led 20-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the Beginning of the 2nd quarter, Berwick’s Tyler Winter got into the endzone to draw the game back to one score.

After Berwick got some momentum , Crestwood’s Matt Sklarosky grabbed it away as he fought his way to the ball on this score. 27-14 would be the score at half.

Berwick came out the locker room and allowed a Crestwood TD to make it a 19-point deficit. But what Berwick did next was something they haven’t done all season, started a comeback.

After Crestwood had given the ball back to Berwick, they got into the endzone early into the 4th quarter. The score was now 33-20.

A few turnovers traded between both sides opened the window of opportunities for Berwick. The Dawgs got in once again and now they only trailed by one score.

After Berwick got the ball back again, they lost the ball and it looked like all was lost.

With around 4 minutes left in the ball game, the wet surface got to Crestwood again and they fumbled. Berwick had a chance again, they did not capitalize.

Berwick had one prayer of a drive and it did not work out, Crestwood won 33-27.

The Dawgs struggle of a season continues, as they fall to 2-7 on the year. With the rain, it looked like it limited the gap between both squads and it worked to Berwick’s advantage. Their fight in the 2nd half was maybe the highlight of their season. A date with Hazleton next week at Crispin Field might just decide their playoff hopes.

After a 0-3 start, Crestwood is delighted to have a winning record at 5-4. With Dallas , Wyoming Area and Valley View taking all the praise in the District 2 4A playoffs, lookout for Crestwood to be a sneaky contender. The Comets did all this without star QB Jaden Shedlock as he was out with a injury. The running game was as good as it always is and they held on in the end.

After the game I spoke with Crestwood Head Coach Ryan Arcangeli
