Dawgs pluck the Comets from the sky

In years past when the Berwick Dawgs have played the Crestwood Comets, Berwick was on a winning streak and was a given that they would beat the Comets. Then the tables turned and the Dawgs started losing for a few years. Well, this seems to be changing back again, last year it was 47-0 Berwick, and it is only a wonder if Berwick will continue this current trend, and it didn’t take long to realize they would.

It started from the opening kickoff, with Crestwood receiving the, fumbling it and less than 5 minutes later Berwick gets on the board making it 7-0. After that Crestwood is pushed back to the 11 yard line, then a few plays later it is now 4 & 25 and Crestwood is forced to kick and Berwick brought it to Crestwood’s 41. With 1:31 on the clock, Crestwood is charged with a false start but it’s declined. Then with it being 3 & 10 and 50.1 left in the first, they kick to Berwick but  the ball touched a Dawg player Crestwood recovered but could only get it close and still not score by the end of the quarter, leaving the score 7-0.

At the start of the 2nd quarter, Crestwood got close enough to make a field goal attempt but that is all it is, an attempt. Then with 10:53 left the Dawgs fumble on the Comets 28 but were unable to complete the deal and end up having to give the ball back. With Crestwood pushing it to within 21 yards of the goal line and it being 3 & 16, they go for a long pass and it is caught with a 1 handed catch and get on the board making it 7-7. When Berwick gets the ball back they get it to their 47, then  on 4 & 1 they punch it through and get 1st down. They then go for a long pass and catch for a TD. On the play a Crestwood player hit Berwick player late, then a 2nd Comet player does the same. Berwick took the 2 penalties on the kick and 4 plays later got the ball back with 6:31 left in the half. Five plays later the QB almost dropped the ball, recovered and got 5 yards. Berwick got hit with a false start, but still pushed and made the score 21-7 ending the 1st half.

Just 34 seconds into the second half, the Dawgs get hit with a holding penalty and with a few more mistakes it isn’t looking like a good quarter for Berwick.  They do eventually get close enough and on one play the Berwick quarterback couldn’t find any receivers so he decided to run it, tried to jump over a blocker and missed clearing him by 6 inches. Next play they make it 28-7. After stopping Crestwood from making much progress they get the ball back and make a fast run of it bringing the score to 35-7, ending the 3rd.

The 4th quarter goes fast as with about 5 minutes left in the game Alejandro Lopez, photo above, runs it in to make it 42-7 thus putting mercy rule in play, ending the game with the score of 42-7. Next week Berwick will be challenging Dallas at Dallas. Last year Berwick was defeated twice by Dallas.
