The Scranton Knights beat city rival West Scranton 15-0 in their annual Bell game at Scranton Memorial stadium Saturday morning in front of a generous enthusiastic crowd.
The Knights got the opening kick-off. QB Arvel Chandeler took command of the offense by running for the initial first down on the first drive. But his momentum was broken when defensive back Conner Price picked off a pass intended for number 14 Michael Slavinski on the Invaders 32 yard line.
West Side could not take advantage of the turnover and fumbled on the snap on the Invader 44-yard line. Neither the Knights nor the Invaders were able to sustain any type of drive under the pressure of tenacious defenses. The first quarter ended scoreless.
The second quarter was all Scranton as they scored twice. The first score was aided by a slew of penalties on the part of an overly excited Invader team, setting up the first score by QB Arvel Chandler on a two-yard run. The two point conversion was good and Scranton was up 8-0 with 4:02 left in the second quarter.
The invaders left nothing on the table when they faked a punt on fourth and four in their own territory. The bold attempt failed, however, leaving Knights in excellent field condition and added confidence. On the every next play, former Invader running back transfer Devin Chollette , ran the ball 34 yards for another Knight touchdown. The extra point was good. The Knights took a 15-0 lead with 1:52 remaining in the half.
The second half was mostly a stalemate for both teams except for a last 2-minute drive by West Scranton that was interrupted by an interception on the part Devon Chollette that ended any Invader hope of winning the Bell Trophy. The Bell Tolled for Scranton.
Scranton 1-1 host Delaware Valley 1-1 Friday and West Side 0-2 travels to Valley View 1-0.
