Zane Janiszewski was a ubiquitous figure at the North Pocono Sports complex Friday night as he led his Wildcats to a convincing 27-3 victory over the North Pocono Trojans. I spoke to the Wildcats’s workhorse after his stunning performance which yielded 215 yards rushing on 27 attempts, three touchdowns and several key tackles on defense. And he was quick to point out: ‘’We are the only team with 1000 yards rushing in the first four games.” The All Star that had all the stats on offense and defense rushed to give his offensive line credit : “ We can’t do anything without them (Offense Line). They bust their butts in practice week in and week out. “
The first quarter was no indication of the lopsided Wildcats victory. On the opening kickoff, North Pocono unsuccessfully attempted an onside kick and gave Western Wayne good field position. But the Trojans came to play. Their playoff hopes hung in the balance. They stopped the Wildcats on the first series of downs and forced them to punt. The Trojans took possession deep in their own territory with 7:00 minutes on the clock and began a systematic drive led by (WR) turned (QB) Ryan Dolphin who bravely took the helm in place of starting (QB) William Soma who was sidelined with an injury. The Trojans marched down the field, masterfully controlling the clock. Their drive would be halted by a series of penalties, and they would be forced to punt, but not before consuming the entire first quarter. The 1st quarter ended 0-0-.
The second quarter, each team gave a somewhat even account of each other with Janiszewski scoring a touchdown with only 55 seconds on the clock and Trojans kicker Jordan Carr scoring a 44-yard field goal at the horn. The half ended 7-3 in favor of the Wildcats.
In the third quarter the Wildcats escaped their cages with 6:43 remaining . Janiszewski added his second touchdown of the night from 8 yards out, furthering Western Wayne’s lead 13-3.
The final quarter saw a methodical breakdown of a courageous Trojan team. The Wildcats ground game was tortuous. Without one pass thrown by the Wildcats all night the front line of the Trojans saw what must have seemed like a Mack truck backing up and coming forward time after time. (QB) Caden Brungard would run 40 yards for another score and Janiszewski would top things off with 3:08 left in the game with a 32 yard touchdown run. The extra points were good and the Wildcats roared to a 27-3 victory.
Western Wayne (4-1) plays host to Wallenpaupack (2-3) North Pocono is not scheduled to play.
