The PIAA state playoffs kicked off this weekend and one of the first-round matchups was the Delaware Valley Warriors against the Altoona Mountain Lions. One key difference in Friday’s game was Warriors Senior Captain Jason Henderson. Henderson finished the game with 213 yards rushing and two touchdowns along with two catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns. He also finished with 15 tackles on defense. Over the summer we at PaFootballNews do player previews for the upcoming year and Henderson was just one of many. In the preview, he said, “ So one of my goals for the team would be to make it past week 13 because we haven’t been able to do it yet and I believe if we make it to week 14 we would be the first team in Delaware Valley history to be able to do it for football”. Although it may not have been 13 games, he and the Warriors were able to achieve this goal and advance to the next round of the PIAA 6A state playoffs.

To start the game Altoona had possession and they were driving down the field. On a fourth down and four attempt, the ball was fumbled and recovered by Warriors Junior Harlem Cook at the 18-yard line. A few plays later Henderson would score his first touchdown of the night. After breaking outside Henderson took the ball 57 yards to the house. The point-after attempt by Junior Cormac Starr was no good giving the Warriors a 6-0 lead early in the game.

Altoona would take advantage of their next drive but not without a few hiccups. On the drive, the ball was fumbled again but luckily Altoona was able to fall on it and keep possession. A few plays later they were forced to punt but were saved with a roughing the kicker call that gave them a first down. A few plays later Senior quarterback Marcus Day hit Senior Tyreke Green for a 16-yard touchdown. The Point after attempt by Sophomore Ian Palilla was good, giving Altoona a 7-6 lead with 3:06 left in the first quarter.

Altoona would force a punt on the following Warrior’s possession and they wasted no time driving down the field. However, on a third-down Warriors, Freshman Aiden Blac chased down the quarterback forcing a long fourth down and a punt that landed at the seven-yard line. Delaware Valley would find the endzone near the end of the half. On a fourth down and three from the 19-yard line, Warriors quarterback Aiden Oliver would find Senior Finn Mccormack for a gain of 10 down to the 9-yard line. Two plays later Henderson would find the endzone for a second time from 2 yards out. Henderson would get the ball on the two-point conversion as he dove his way in giving the Warriors a 14-7 lead with 1:18 to go in the half.

To open the second half the Warriors received and wasted no time scoring. On third down and eight from the 42-yard line, Oliver connected with Henderson and after a few broken tackles, he took the ball 58 yards for the touchdown. The point-after attempt by Starr was good pushing the Warriors lead to 21-7. The next Warriors possession also led to a Henderson touchdown. This time Oliver and Henderson connected from 13 yards out. The point-after attempt by Starr was good, giving the Warriors a 28-7 lead with 5:19 to go in the third quarter. Altoona would answer on the following possession when Junior running back Ethan Stroup scampered for a 53-yard touchdown. The point-after attempt by Palilla was good, making the score 28-14. The final scoring play of the night came early in the fourth quarter when Senior running back Preston Machado ran in from 3 yards out. The point-after attempt by Starr was good, making the final score of the night 35-14 Warriors.

After the game Henderson went back to what he said over the summer, saying “ This is the greatest feeling in my life, I’ve played on this team for the past three years since my Freshman year. On this exact field, my first two came up short. And now Senior, Captain there is nothing better than to be able to take this group of guys back onto this field and get a victory and be the first team in Delaware Valley history to make it past the first round of states.” For Henderson and the Delaware Valley Warriors, they advance and play Central York next week in the PIAA 6A state playoffs. For the Altoona Mountain Lions, there season has come to an end with a 4-5 season record and a District 6 title.
