With 2 weeks already quickly in the books, High School Football in Pennsylvania turns over to week 3 of the season.
This week was a tale of two opposite sides of the spectrum. On one end, Lackawanna Trail is one of the premier teams in PIAA 1A football. Last year they were state runner-ups. This year, they’ve gotten off to a relatively rocky start. Western Wayne took it to Lackawanna Trail 28-7 last week. After the showing Lackawanna Trail put on this week, it feels like more of a good win last week for Western Wayne and not a bad loss for Lackawanna Trail.
Berwick struggled last week, scoring 0 offensive points. Against Mid Valley, they couldn’t stop the run or get anything going on their own. Mid Valley beat them 28-7 last week, and Berwick fell to 0-2. Entering the game, Berwick had gone 7 straight quarters without an offensive score. After losing tonight in a shutout, they’ve now gone 11 consecutive quarters without putting up a singular point
Lions Pride Stadium in Factoryville was decently full, with a beautiful skyline displaying a beautiful backdrop to this contest.
Berwick came out with an effective drive, pressing into Trail territory within the first five minutes. In what has been a huge story of the young season, the Berwick drive stalled and ended with 0 points. Multiple times in weeks 1 and 2, promising drives were spoiled by either a turnover, penalties, or an inability to move the sticks.
Lackawanna Trail came out in their classic triple-option offense, and it worked. All day, Berwick knew what was coming, but it didn’t matter. Isaac Ryon had a huge physical run to set the Lions up with great field position. After his big run, Ryon polished off his drive with a score, and Lackawanna Trail led 7-0.

In the 2nd half, Lackawanna Trail took the opening kickoff to the house and picked off Berwick on the ensuing drive. Within 70 seconds, Lackawanna Trail scored 14 points and led 28-0.
When the final horn sounded, Lackawanna Trail won 35-0, a perfect shutout.
After a degrading loss last week, Lackawanna Trail gets a huge win not only on the scoreboard but in terms of the morale of the squad. Defensively, Lackawanna Trail played sound football, like always. The Lions rarely missed a tackle and often broke tackles on the offensive side. Trail flat-out manhandled Berwick for 48 minutes. The panic siren did sound last week after the loss, it is safe to say, that it was a false alarm and Lackawanna Trail will be just fine. They play at Dunmore next Friday night at 7.
Seems like I’m a broken record at this point, but Berwick just can’t seem to figure it out. Once again, they did not score offensively. The defense was pretty solid, allowing just 14 points (Trail scored on ST, D). After an abysmal defensive showing last year, the unit looks improved. On the other hand, the offense has struggled. The QB play has been subpar, and the offense is suffering from it. It is hard to find a bright spot in the offense through three weeks. Berwick is home next week against Hazleton on Friday Night at 7.
