BERWICK – Northwestern Lehigh QB Shane Leh completed 15-of-16 passes on the evening for 217 yards and 4 TDs to lead his Tigers back to Eastern semi-finals after a 42-14 rout of Scranton Prep Friday evening.
Leh started the evening completing his first nine passes, however it was the Tiger defense that struck first.
On the fifth play from scrimmage Braxton Lakatosh stepped in front of a Will McPartland pass and returned it 34 yards for the game’s opening score with 9:15 left showing on the clock.
The Tigers’ lead wouldn’t last long, however, as McPartland led the Cavaliers on a six-play scoring drive to tie the game up midway through the opening quarter. Highlighted by a 33-yard run by McPartland, the Cavaliers signal caller hit pay dirt from two yards out with 6:07 left to knot the game up at 7-all.
After the Cavaliers’ TD, Leh and the Tigers went quickly back to work to score 28 unanswered points. On their first offensive drive Leh went 5-for-5 on their 7-play drive, capped by an 11-yard pass to Brady Zimmerman to put the Tigers in front, 14-7 with 3:57 remaining.
Northwestern Lehigh held Scranton Prep to a 3-and-out on their ensuing drive as the first quarter came to a close. When the Tigers offense took back over, they only needed 10 plays to find the end zone again. Leh went 4-for-4 through the air on the drive, hitting Shane Hulmes on an 11-yard pass in the end zone to extend the Tigers lead to 21-7.
Northwestern Lehigh scored once more before the hand ended on a 19-yard connection from Leh to Michael Lagowy with 18.3 seconds remaining, giving the Tigers a 28-7 lead at the break.
After the halftime break the Tigers’ offense went back to work as they received the second half kickoff. The Tigers only needed eight plays to find the end zone, capped by a six-yard Zimmerman run, increasing the lead to 35-7.
Both teams scored once more on the evening in the game’s final quarter. After the Tigers went up 35-7 the Cavaliers put together a 16-play drive, with 14 of those plays coming on the ground, culminating on a 4-yard pass from McPartland to Shawn McCormick.
Northwestern Lehigh’s final score came with 4:37 remaining on a 40-yard strike from Leh to Zimmerman.
The District XI champion Tigers (14-0) will now match up against District III’s Trinity (11-3), who edged Neumann-Goretti 26-22 at Exeter Township.
