Ruby Review: Introduction

Hello everybody! This post is to announce a series of articles I’ll be writing over the coming season for PA Football News, covering games from PIAA Districts 2, 4, and 11.

When I moved to Wilkes-Barre a few weeks ago, I realized that I’m 1) single, 2) not much of a partier, and 3) currently without a television, all of which means that my Friday nights were shaping up to be pretty dull.

I also realized, however, that I was now within shouting distance of a ton of very good high school football teams that I had heard about all my life but never seen in person. After struggling to decide which team I should follow (The closest to my apartment, Holy Redeemer? Perennial power Berwick? Big boys Parkland?), I realized that I should follow them all. Why not? I’m right in the heart of District 2, and a short drive on I-80 or the Northeast Extension from Districts 4 and 11!

The next step was deciding which games I should go to. I didn’t want to miss any really good teams, but I also didn’t want to see a bunch of blow-outs. I decided to plan out a schedule that allowed me to see the very best match-ups I possibly could without seeing any team more than once. The tentative schedule I came up with is:

Aug. 29          Berwick @ Crestwood
Sep. 5              Wyoming Valley West @ Delaware Valley
Sep. 6              Pleasant Valley @ Bethlehem Catholic
Sep. 12            Stroudsburg @ East Stroudsburg South
Sep. 13            Williamsport @ Abington Heights
Sep. 19            Old Forge @ Lake-Lehman
Sep. 20            Scranton @ Scranton Prep
Sep. 26            Dunmore @ Carbondale
Oct. 3              Southern Columbia @ Mount Carmel
Oct. 4              Saucon Valley @ Pen Argyl
Oct. 10            Easton @ Parkland
Oct. 11            Holy Redeemer @ Pius X
Oct. 17            Lakeland @ Honesdale
Oct. 24            North Schuylkill @ Schuylkill Haven
Oct. 31            Northwestern Lehigh @ Catasauqua

Once I decided which games I would go to, the decision to write about them was automatic. I’m a stats-head. I’ve come up with my own NCAA Football Rankings for a few years now. I’ve been analyzing sports since I was in diapers (that’s only a slight exaggeration). My ultimate goal with this series is to provide a detailed picture of the best teams in Northeast PA by combining a first-hand account of the best games with just enough league-wide statistics to back up my observations.

I’ll be covering the Berwick-Crestwood Week 1 match-up this Friday, so until then comment here or hit me up on Twitter (@JoeRuby1009) with any questions or comments about me or PIAA Football in general. I’m also open to suggestions on changing my proposed schedule around, so let me know what you think! At some point, I’ll be playing around with a new high school football ranking system, so be on the lookout!
