“This is the most state quarterfinals we’ve won, one.” That what Muncy head coach Sean Tetreault said when asked how many state playoffs games the Indians have won. Tonight at Cedar Cliff Muncy running back Austin Johnson rushed for 332 yards and four touchdowns and hauled in a TD pass to lead the Indians to a 41-17 win over Delone Catholic.
The game didn’t start well for Muncy. Sort of. After receiving the opening kick they drove to the Delone 6 but a fumble by quarterback Stiles Eyer gave Delone the ball on the 20. It didn’t make much of a difference as the Muncy defense forced a punt.
Starting on their 34, Muncy drove the length of the field with 2 big runs by Johnson and Landyn Wommer. Johnson got his first score of the night on a 9 yard run up the middle with 1:38 remaining in the first quarter.

Delone fought back with what started out as a nice drive of their own on the next possession but again the Muncy defense stepped up and got the back back on downs at the 44. Johnson took the first handoff and fought his way 40 yards, dragging would be tacklers along the way to the Delone 16. On the very next play Eyer hit him for a 16 yard td pass to put Muncy up 14-0 with 10:49 to play in the second quarter.

On their next drive the Squires found a weakness. Zack Staub found Chris Cole for a 45 yard td pass to make it a 14-7 game. It looked as though momentum switched as the Delone defense forced a three and out series but a fumble during a 65 yard catch and run by Levi Hohenstein gave the ball back to Muncy on their 16. The play was stellar for both teams, but Muncy won that battle when Dominic Guardini chased down Hohenstein at the 6, stripped the ball preventing a sure touchdown, and Carter Fiegles returned the ball to the 16.

Muncy went on a long, time consuming drive of 9 plays that featured several runs by Eyer with a 13 yard pass to Wommer tossed in. Johnson scored from 15 yards out to put Muncy up 20-7. The Indians had one more chance to score but a 41 yard field goal attempt had the distance but went wide.
On the first play of the second half Delone fumbled again giving Muncy the ball on the 46. It took just one play to make it a 27-7 score. Johnson took the ball from the fullback position, busted through the line and was gone.

“Those guys up front play as one unit. They were solid all night” said Treault. “They played physical tonight. Austin is gonna exploit anything they give him”.
Delone drove to the Muncy 7 but had to settle for a field goal. After Muncy punted on their next possession, Delone showed what they wanted to do. Staub completed several pass but three straight incompletions were followed up by an interception by Nathan Rogers giving the Indians the ball on their 22. On the next play Johnson had what could be considered his best run of the night. Once again lined up at fullback, Johnson went straight up the gut untouched for a 77 yard score to put Muncy up 35-10 with 1:35 left in the third quarter.

“I just have to give a big shout out to my line” said Johnson. “I just wanna keep fighting and get yards for our team and make the most out of every play”.
Muncy will play the winner of the Bishop Guilfoyle/Westinghouse game being played tomorrow at 1pm.
