(Wyomissing, PA) A years worth of emotion surrounds the annual matchup between Berks Catholic and Wyomissing. Added to this backdrop was news this week that Berks Catholic’s Anthony Myers had been diagnosed with a Brain Tumor. Lets not forget that the winner of this game would be the Berks Section Two Champions. When it finally came down to the effort between the lines, Berks Catholic was to much for the Wyomissing Spartans to the tune of 28-7.
Senior Brandon George was again a defensive force to lead the Saints. Brandon also scored on two TD runs for the offence. This was BC’s Senior Quarterback Terry Derr’s third win in a row in the “brawl”. Berks Catholic relied heavily on Terry’s abilities in the passing game for the win.
“At first it really broke us down as a team” said Derr on the news about Anthony Myers this week “but then it brought us together more as a family, for that first day it was a distraction to us, then we made it our building block mainly to fight and powered us through even more.” Luis Garcia who wore Myers Number 17 in his honor for the game said “we dedicated this game to Anthony, everything is for him the rest of the season.” Brandon George reveled in the hard hitting and emotion of the contest “that’s how we love it! we love the fight in the trenches, that’s what makes a football game a football game, especially out here in the rain and the mud, it made for one heck of a game.” Saints Head Coach Rick Keely had high praise of his team after the win. “They are a great group of kids, its an emotional game every time we play these guys. Emotions got the better of us in the first half and we kept battling through it… when we line up right and stop committing penalties we are a very good football team.”
Berks Catholic got the scoring started at the 8:17 mark of quarter one when Terry Derr was right on target to Luis Garcia.
