(Reading, PA) Berks Catholic has had its hands full the first five weeks of the non league season.  The Saints PIAA opponents have been one or two classifications higher.  The non-PIAA teams have been traditional national or regional powers.  This week, BC settled into playing a conference foe for the first time this season.  Thursday night the battle tested Saints showed why they are the odds on favorites to win the Berks II title.  Berks Catholic(4-2) defeated Hamburg(2-3) 52-8 in a special Thursday night game in the Reading Gridiron Classic played at First Energy Stadium.

The Saints offense was led by Quarterback Senior Terry Derr.  Terry picked apart the Hamburg secondary all night long.  Whether it was across the middle or with precision corner routes, Derr was pinpoint all game.  Luis Garcia and Abdul MacFoy also had has nice efforts for the BC ground attack.

The game being played at First Energy Stadium which had special meaning to Saints Head Coach Rick Keeley.  “I played football and baseball in this stadium” said coach Keeley.  “I wanted to make sure we got everyone in the game tonight, and we did.  I wanted these players to be able to say that they played in this stadium just like I did.”

Berks Catholic imposed its will early on the Hamburg Hawks. The opening Saints drive was culminated by Pitt commit Brandon George TD and it was 7-0 early.

The next BC possession hit pay dirt as well  This time it was Abdul MacFoy and it was 14-0 not yet halfway through the first quarter.

The BC defense was stout once again.  Following a Hawk punt, Quarterback Terry Derr hit Jaden Vazquez in stride on a corner route and it was BC 20 Hamburg 0.

There was still plenty of fight in the Hamburg Hawks as quarter two starter.  A nice TD grab by Austin Gromlich made it 20-8 with 9:20 till half.

Luis Garcia had a nice night on the ground for BC and the Saints answered right back.

Watch this sweet move from Anthony Myers to get the score to 35-8, WOW!

One of the best kickers in District Three and the State of PA is Jamin Smith of Berks Catholic.  His 39 yard Field Goal with lots to spare sent us to halftime with BC up 38-8.

Berks Catholic had its way with Hamburg in the second half.

Hamburg had trouble with the second half kick giving BC a short field.  Luis Garcia dove one across to make it 45-8 :15 into the second half

As the game wound down Connor Gundersen scored the final points of the game on a nice end run.  The final was Berks Catholic 52 and Hamburg 8.

Berks Catholic’s next league game is with Kutztown.  Another tough task awaits Hamburg next as they face Wyomissing.
