Bishop McDevitt evens the score, takes down Aliquippa with 41 to 18 victory to claim 2022 PIAA Class 4A State Football Championship at Cumberland Valley Stadium !

It didn’t take long for the Crusaders to show they came ready to play when on the first play of their opening drive, Stone Saunders would connect with TyShawn Russell on a pass up the middle and Russell would take off 70 yards to the endzone, giving McDevitt an early 7 to 0 lead with 10:20 left in the first quarter. The Crusaders would shut down the Quips offense on three straight possessions as the Quips would go three and out on all 3. With 5:26 to go in the opening quarter, Saunders would suffer his first of three interceptions when Junior DB-Brandon Banks would step in front of the pass for the pick. Aliquippa would answer on the possession going 69 yards, capped off with an 11 yard pass to Cameron Lindsey, the two-point would not be converted and we ourselves a 7 to 6 game just before the end of the first quarter.

A huge interception by the Crusaders Ty Kephart, a Junior SS, returned 64 yards to the Aliquippa 6 yard line, would setup the next touchdown of the game when Saunders would hit Russell again, this time for 12 yards and the score to put McDevitt up 13 to 6 following a failed point after attempt with 5:10 left to go in the first half. Another turnover by the Quips would have the Crusaders in great field position to begin their next drive. The fumble recovery by Riley Robell. Four plays and 25 yards later, McDevitt would put it in the endzone when Saunders would throw his third of five touchdowns in the game, this one to Rico Scott with 2:58 left in the half with the Crusaders now leading 20 to 6.

Stone Saunders would go 6 of 7 for 113 yards in the first half, throwing three touchdown passes. Russell would close out the half with 2 receptions for 82 yards and two scores.

The Crusaders would receive the second half kickoff but nothing would come out of the drive. On the Quips first drive, they would suffer yet another turnover when Brennan Almond would jump on the ball and recover the fumble, and the Crusaders would take over the Quip 28. One play, was all it took for McDevitt to score when Saunders and Russell would connect again from 28 yards out, giving McDevitt a 27 to 6 lead with 10:12 to go in the quarter.

Aliquippa would score before the quarter ended when Saunders would throw his second interception of the game, a pick-6 for 56 yards by Tiqwai Hayes would add some life back into the players but would only be shortly lived as the Crusaders would answer again when Saunders would hit Russell again, for their fourth touchdown connection of the night, this one from 11 yards, giving McDevitt a commanding 34 to 6 lead with 4:19 still to go in the third quarter.

Aliquippa would make a short lived comeback attempt scoring twice more, but for the final score of the game, it was McDevitt’s senior running-back Marquese Williams for a 2 yard plunge to put the Crusaders up 41 to 18 late in the fourth. Both teams would combine for a whopping 21 penalties, and 7 turnovers between the two. It was McDevitt outgaining the Quips by 138 yards, going for 278 yards of offense to 140 for Aliquippa.

Following the game, we talked with star QB Stone Saunders, and WR Tyshawn Russell after their huge games offensively for the Crusaders.
