Crusaders collect 5th straight and 19th overall District title with 38 to 20 victory over a valiant Solanco squad Friday night at Grosh Field at Warwick High School giving Head Coach Jeff Weachter 300 career wins.  Junior QB-Sebastian Williams throws for 248 yards and a touchdown, Jerome Larue Jr. and Maurice Barnes Jr. each collecting 2 touchdowns on the ground.

Solanco came into the game looking to win its first District 3 Championship in football and started off in impressive fashion going 80 yards on just 3 plays capped off with a 43 run from Senior RB-Kris Burgos-Wise to put the Golden Mules in front early 7 to 0. Bishop McDevitt responded with quickness however when Crusaders Junior QB-Sebastian Williams connected with Jontai Quick for 78 yards and the score to tie the game at 7 with 9:47 to go in the opening quarter.

The Golden Mules weren’t afraid, showing lots of poise on their next drive going 79 yards this time with the help of a few costly penalties on the Crusaders setting up the games next score when Burgos-Wise scored his second touchdown of the quarter, giving Solanco the lead once again with 4:37 still to go in the first quarter. The Crusaders once again, showed why they are defending state champs, never getting down on themselves, putting together a 5 play, 80 yard drive of their own, finished off with a 47 yard touchdown run from Jerome Larue to tie the game at 14 with 3:07 to go still in the first quarter. Larue finished the first half with 2 touchdowns and 69 yards on just 4 carries.

McDevitt took the lead following a fumble recovery by Senior LB-Campbell Miltsch giving the Crusaders great field position to start their next drive at the Mules 38. A pass from Williams to Barnes for 28 yards had the Crusaders deep into Mules territory at the 10 but a flag set them back to the 17. A sack by a slew of Solanco defenders had the Crusaders facing a 4th and goal from the 23. Senior Kicker, Aidan Grella drilled a 40 yard field goal to give McDevitt their first lead of the game 17 to 14 with 11:56 to go till halftime. Flags were the main issue with the Crusaders in the first half keeping Solanco close up to this point.

The Crusaders added to their lead with 2:58 left in the half when Larue took the handoff and ran 14 yards to paydirt to make the score 24 to 14 McDevitt with the lead. Following the touchdown, we had 3 fouls, 2 by McDevitt, 1 by Solanco. McDevitt got the ball back shortly after with an interception by the Senior CB-Jamison Crummel. McDevitt had one more shot to add to their lead when the Crusaders setup for a 55 field goal only to be missed just wide left with :18 seconds left in the opening half, closing out the half with the score 24 to 14 McDevitt leading.

Solanco got a big stop deep in their own territory when Burgos, who was having a stellar game offensively, picked off Williams at the 11 to give the Golden Mules some life trailing 24 to 14. Nothing amounted on the drive, forced to punt on 4th and 12. The Crusaders weren’t about to lighten up as they put together one of their better drives of the night, going 59 yards on 10 plays, chewing up over 6 minutes, sending us into the final quarter of play and the games next score when Maurice Barnes jr. raced 6 yards for the score to add to the lead, now 31 to 14 over Solanco with 11:44 to play in the game.

The Crusaders final score of the evening came with 9:45 to play when Barnes jr. ran 10 yards to the endzone, giving McDevitt a commanding 38 to 14 lead. Solanco never gave up in the game, forcing a fumble and recovery, then scoring with 2:46 to play when Wesley Bard took the handoff and ran it 10 yards into the endzone, closing the gap to 18, 38 to 20 but it was just alittle too late as the Crusaders finished off the Golden Mules to win their 5th straight and 19th overall District Championship as well as giving Head Coach Jeff Weachter his 300th career win.
