CENTRAL DAUPHIN BLANKS BERKS CATHOLIC 7-0

(Reading, PA) The most intriguing matchup in District Three Friday night was perennial Mid Penn Conference 6A powerhouse Central Dauphin going to Reading to face 4A Berks Catholic.  The two teams had never met prior to Friday.  Berks Catholic came into the game off a convincing victory over cross town rival 5A Exeter.  CD had a historic win last week over Wilson WL.  Something had to give.  Both teams slugged it out against one another in the trenches all night long.  In the end, Central Dauphin’s ability to play mistake free football  earned a  7-0 win over Berks Catholic Friday night.

Exemplifying the tough, hard nose tone of the game was CD (2-0) running back Adam Burkhart.  Adam scored the only touchdown of the game and blasted his way through a stingy Berks Catholic (1-1) defense all night long.  Burkhart was awarded the Astroturf PaFootballNews Friday Night Live player of the game.

Rams Head Coach Glen McNamee had high praise for his teams defensive effort shutting down the vaunted Saints running attack.. “the wing T is a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing in a sense that they do have keys, and if your disciplined enough to follow them and play physical football then those keys are going to take you to the play and our kids did that tonight.”

For the entire first half both teams struggled to move against defense.  Berks Catholic’s inability to take advantage of some  productive first half drives would ultimately cost them in the end.  One drive ended on a blocked field goal attempt.  The other had them turning the ball over on downs deep in Ram territory.  The Berks defense gave up absolutely nothing and we were scoreless at halftime.

Berks Catholic took the second half kick and Abdul MacFoy who was sparkling in the return game all night set up the Saints with good field position.  A time consuming drive by BC yielded no points thanks to the suffocating CD defense.  Rams Head Coach Glen McNamee then shook things up in the third quarter by inserting Freshman QB Max Mosey.  Starting deep in their own end, Central Dauphin had some quick success.  Tyler Leisher had two big runs that put the Rams in business deep in the Saints end.  Burkhart then blasted in from the 1 at the 5:56 mark of the third and it was 7-0 CD and that’s how the quarter ended.

The Saints kept pounding away at CD in the fourth quarter and the Rams defense came up big each time.  Two BC fourth quarter drives ended with turnovers in the CD end.  The backbreaker was lost fumble deep in Rams territory on BC’s most productive drive of the game.  The second was an interception by the CD defense that secured a hard fought win with under two minutes to play.

It does not get any easier for Berks Catholic next week.  National power McDonogh School comes into Reading next week. Central Dauphin hosts Manheim Township.
