As of two weeks ago, State College Area High school football appeared as though no season would be played… but it’s 2020 and things change fast. The State College Little Lions found out late September 17th that a plan had passed for them to play when in-person courses resumed. In-person instruction was previously stopped due to State College’s community numbers. When school resumed Monday, September 21st the Lions knew it was a go.

Although Central Dauphin’s season was early on riddled by mystery, the team was allowed to begin their season in week 1 which would be a blowout win vs Chambersburg. But with all that aside we have a game to talk about.

The Lions and Rams do not like each other that was apparent as both teams hit the field for warm-ups. Both sides seeming to be shooting lasers at each with there eyes. Equally as evident was that the Rams still had their dominant playmakers in Timmy Smith and Max Mosey, who both looked sharp the previous week. But State High seemed to have some hidden firepower in a 6’5 Defensive Lineman originally from Durham North Carolina. Just based on looks both teams looked big and physical. The game would be just that.

The Lions won the coin flip and deferred the ball to the second half. The opening kick was where it started for Timmy Smith and the Rams who despite the deep kick took it for a touchdown the first time the ball was in his hands. It was indicative of what would come from Smith all night. State High tried to make the big plays early on when they got the ball back but everything was just a little short having penalty problems to start the game. It was no help that the Lions star running back Dresyn Green would not be playing. After a short drive, the Lions would punt back to the Rams, after many back and forth drives from both teams. Forcing fumbles and interceptions… and a few punts. CD was once again able to score late in the 2nd quarter when Max Mosey would hurl a beautiful deep ball to Tyrell English for a 60-yard touchdown. After a good extra point from Ahren Stauffer, it was 14-0 CD with 4:53 left in the first half. Both teams ran out the clock before going to the half.

CD came once again ready to play in the second half feeling good about their lead but looking to make it grow. As for State High, many halftime inspiration and draw ups had the team feeling pretty refreshed. It even looked that way as the Lions got the kickoff, which sparked a short but most productive drive to this point. But when State was forced to punt CD’s offense would again assert there will on the ground game. Running dives and Jet Sweeps every play as the Lions defense could seem to keep up no matter the Running Back. With CD’s long deflating drives it wouldn’t be till there was only 4:56 left in the third quarter that we would see a score again. It came from Shamarr Joppy on a 5-yard run, another extra point and it was 21-0 CD. Just a little over a minute later and the Rams would once again score this time Max Mosey dropped a dime to Malachi Bowman for a 37-yard touchdown pass which would silence the Lions sideline momentarily despite that there was only 3:22 left in the 3rd and CD led 28-0. After another kick off from CD, State High finally had the spark they needed. New starting Quarterback Conrad Moore decided to call his number on a play-action. His special combo of speed and power helped him slip through the few players in the secondary, and he was off for an 89-yard touchdown run with 2:36 left in the 3rd quarter CD still lead but now 28-7.

State knew they needed another spark when they got the ball back early into the fourth quarter. They got that spark in Junior slot wide receiver TJ Yoder, in States first drive in the fourth quarter Yoder made 3 catches the last of which was a touchdown from about 35 yards out. The extra point was tipped at the line making it 28-13 with 9:45 left in the game. CD would still lead despite State’s late spark. CD however would deflate the Lions hopes as they methodically went downfield sticking to the run game. With 5:03 left in the game the Rams would once again score on the run the Rams now lead 35-13. State high would put in backups and take time off the clock as the game ended not wanting to cause an unneeded injury. The game’s final score would be 35-13 CD for there the second year in a row bests the lions.

Looking into next week the Rams have a road game at Carlisle and the Lions have a home game taking on the Cumberland Valley Eagles.
