An emotional Elijah Vargas kneels in the endzone after his team held off the Cougars

With just 17 seconds left on the clock, Harrisburg quarterback Nicari Williams dropped back, scrambled and threw hit Kyrell Williams over the middle. He cut left headed for the sideline and as he scrambled for the sidelines the siren to end the game went off. He was eventually brought down at the 3 yard line. Looking up at the clock I saw zeros. Central dauphin had pulled off a major upset with a 15 to 14 win over nationally ranked Harrisburg. For the cougars, they couldn’t overcome the five first half interceptions thrown and two second half turnovers plus an unsuccessful onside kick attempt.

Trailing the Cougars 14 to 7 late in the fourth quarter, Central Dauphin got  the ball at the 50 after the Cougars attempted an onside kick. They got to the Harrisburg 17. Quarterback Mosley Road right on a play then went back to the left down the sidelines it into the end zone to make it 14-13 with just under three minutes to play. The Rams called time out and head Glenn McNamee sent in a two point conversion play. Mosley dropped back to throw rolled right turn around and headed left and went right into the end zone for the two-point conversion giving the Rams the deciding point. “They were different plays that played out the same. It just shows the talent our sophomore quarterback has. The decision to go for the win exemplifies our season. Everyone has a different path, ours has been a rocky one. It hasn’t come easy.”

Harrisburg did have an opportunity to score again and got inside the 50 yard line but fumbled the ball away allowing the Rams to take some time off the clock. Central Dauphin had their scoring chances slip away also. They missed two field goals in the game. One from 37 that was short on their opening drive of the game and another from 34 on their opening drive of the second half.

Both teams struggle to move the ball offense of Lee the first half but it was the Rams to struck first. But it was the Rams defensive backs that came up big throughout the game. Elijah Vargas and Nick Chimienti had two interceptions. “Give credit to Shawn Ross the best defensive coordinator in the state!” said MacNamee afterwards. “Our kids have gone through a lot and that was what has prepared them for this moment. You saw a very inspired defense against a very talented offense.”

The Rams opened the scoring with a 16 yard td run by Mosley. The score stayed 7-0 until the Cougars first drive of the second half. Tymek Evans went in from 2 yards out to tie the game at 7. Then in the fourth quarter Harrisburg got the go ahead score when Williams found Trevion Carey who laid out perfectly for the td grab.

Vargas was humble about his defensive effort.  “That’s just what we do on our defense. That’s a great football team over there and we just have to use this and keep rolling”.
