Dallastown had a big victory over Manheim Township 41-38 on Friday night.
Team of the week– Dallastown. After battling last week against Hempfield and coming up short 28-21 Dallastown went against Manheim Township this week. Dallastown was able to win a back and forth game 41-38. Kudos to the Dallastown wildcats for responding with a big win.
Coach of the week– Kris Miller of Ephrata. When Miller took over Ephrata they had a 31 game losing streak. He has steadily rebuilt the program and they have started 2-0 this year after they went 4-3 last year. Next week they have a huge game against Warwick, I will be covering this game. So excited for that one.
Player of the week– Sam Stoner of York High. I love it when players respond after they lose a tough game. Last week Stoner and his York High mates struggled badly against Governor Mifflin. This week they routed McCaskey 54-7. Stoner lead the way with 5 touchdowns, including 4 passing Touchdowns. He also had 237 yards passing in the victory.
Player of the week– Nicholas Singleton of Governor Mifflin. 80 touchdowns are insane. That is what Mifflin’s Singleton has achieved in his career through 3 games of his senior year, this set a Berks record. In a 42-14 win against rival Wilson Singleton was able to cement his legacy in Pennsylvania sports history forever.
Play of the week- QB Power. This is one of my favorite plays as a football coach. People often forget football is a numbers game. If you can gain a blocker in the run game then it is a huge advantage. In a traditional offense, the QB just hands the ball off. Well with QB power you have your QB as the runner and now gain an extra player to block. This is why so many high school football teams run this play.
Football has 4 downs, so here are 4 thoughts from what I saw, watched, and heard this week:
Judd Novak rushes in from 7 yards out for a touchdown. Novak helped lead Manheim Central to a win 14-0 over Hempfield.
1)Even though they were a little sloppy and they didn’t play a great game on Friday I came away impressed with Manheim Central. On both sides of the line of scrimmage, they are really good. They are well-coached and they are a physical football team. I think they will only get better as the year goes on and watch out for them in the playoffs.
2) Kudos to Donegal and Conestoga Valley for bounce-back victories this week. Then both were down in their games and came back to win. Donegal was down 12-0 to a talented Columbia team lead by QB Robert Footman (299 Yards passing) and came back to win 28-to18. Conestoga Valley was down 23-14 at halftime against Garden Spot and came back to win 38-23. Impressive come-back wins for both teams.
3) Another impressive team so far is Cedar Crest. After beating rival Lebanon 38-0 they blow out Gettysburg 52-14. Quietly they are 2-0 and could give all the teams in section 1 of Lancaster-Lebanon some fits.
4) Congrats to Lampeter Straburgs Victor Ridenour on winning his 1st game as head coach. LS after losing 45-22 to Warwick responded with a 31-0 shut-out victory over Penn Manor. LS has rival Conestoga Valley this week.
