On Friday night I watched Central York beat Hempfield 30-20 in a back-and-forth game. I came away really impressed with Central York and running back Juelz Goff. Hempfield will not go away in section 1 of Lancaster Lebanon and I expect them to re-group and do well the rest of the season.

Player of the week– Juelz Goff RB Central York. Goff opened the game with an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage. He then iced the game with a 58-yard touchdown run as well. He rushed for 179 yards total in the game. Goff a Junior is a special player for Central York. His head coach Gerry Yonchiuk told me after the game that this player is the real deal.

Team of the week– Elco. Elco came into Columbia and beat them 21-12 on Friday night. Columbia came into the game 2-0 on the year and had outscored their opponents 64-14. Elco with their steady running game keep Columbia off the field and won a huge game to start 3-0 on the year. Congrats to Elco.

Coach of the week– Chris Maiorino Lancaster Catholic Head Coach. Coach Maiorino took over the program 3 years ago after highly successful Todd Mealy. I was there with coach Maiorino the 1st year as his quarterback’s coach and we struggled through a 2-6 covid year. Coach Maiorino has steadily improved the team with 4 wins last year. Now year 3 into the program and he has his Crusaders playing great and now they are 3-0 on the year including a 41-7 beat down of Octorara Friday night. Congrats coac Maiorino.

Play of the week– Outside zone is a great play when you got a running back who can attack the edge and offensive lineman that can move well. The key is your offensive tackles, tight ends and wide receivers on the edge need to seal the block. Then the running back needs to read the blocks well and hit the angle right.

Inside vs Outside Zone | Breaking Down The Game

Football has 4 downs, so here  are 4 thoughts from what I saw, watched, and heard this week:

1) Huge win by Manheim Township on Saturday when they beat Harrisburg. Manheim township had a slight down year for them last year, but they are back at it this year with a very talented and deep team. They will have a good chance to do well in section 1 race.

2) York High won 54-47 barnburner on Friday night against Carlisle. York High’s 1st win was a huge one for them on the year. Not to be dramatic but that win might have saved their season. They only have 9 games this year so another loss would have severely damaged their playoff chances.

3) Head Coach Keith Stokes has Elizabethtown rolling. On Friday night they beat Lower Dauphin to improve to 3-0 on the year. Stokes has so far done a nice job turning the program around and he is in a great spot in the wide open section 3. Mark down October 7th, 2022 when Elizabethtown travels to Solanco. The winner is probably the favorite to win section 3.

4) Manheim Central continues to roll with an impressive win over Cocalico on Friday night. They are 3-0 on the season and have not missed a beat so far this year.
