Cougars cash in on big plays in win over Millionaires

It was a game that didn’t exist until this weekend.  When Wilkes-Barre had to cancel their game with Williamsport, a hungry Cougar squad stepped in. It probably took Harrisburg Head Coach Cal Everett 2 minutes after being notified that Williamsport had an opening, and with Harrisburg in need of opponents it was a natural fit with the Millionaires who are in a resurgence of sorts and wanted a challenge for their squad.  “When Coach Crews said he was communicating with Everett, I was saying please make this happen. We want to play teams like this to get better” said Millionaires offensive line coach Keith McCabe after the 41-0 loss. “Playing teams like this will make us better”.

Harrisburg rolled in to STD Stadium and before what can be considered a nice crowd in this crazy 2020 season, they rolled right over the Millioniares with speed, power and big plays.  On the third series of the game Kiev Gregg busted loose on a 56 yard jaunt, then we saw the speed of the Cougars when Jaylon Johnston went around end for the 24 yard score. We also saw the power as Penn State Commit Nate Bruce just obliterated a Millionaire lineman on the same play.

Following an exchange of interceptions, the Cougars got things rolling again.  An 11 play, 73 yard drive ended when quarterback John McNeil went in from 1 yard out to increase the lead to 12-0 with 8:23 left in the second quarter.  The Millionaires, to their credit, played tough in the first half. Taking the ball at their 33, they marched to the Harrisburg 6 yard line. The drive was aided by a fake punt when Marrone found Roman Marrone down the sidelines, but on fourth down Terrell Reynolds went to the sky and knocked away Frank Marrones pass.

Coming out in the second half, the Millionaires just couldn’t get things going again. Forcing a quick three and out, the Cougar offense struck again. McNeil found Marquise McMillan wide open at the goal line to increase the Cougar lead to 20-0.

“They’re a tough team. We scored the 2 touchdowns in the first half but they played tough. My hat definitely goes out to Williamsport” said Everett. “We were able to come out in the second half and take care of business. They’re a well coached team and they’re going to make some noise in the playoffs.” Harrisburg increased their lead when Justin Cook made a leaping catch in the back corner of the endzone.

Gregg scored again to put the Cougars up 34-0 and Nayquan Prather cleaned up the scoring with a 15 yard run.  The second half was halted for a while when Avery Campbell had to be taken off in the ambulance with an injury.  We did receive an update after the game and he’s doing ok with feeling in his legs.  We send our prayers of healing out to the Campbell family.

Williamsport (5-1) will face Dallas next week while the Cougars are back on the hunt for another game.
