Hopkins in for one of four tds today

There wasn’t a a whole lot of electrifying, break loose offense from the Cougars today at Severance Field, but there we enough. MaKhai Hopkins ran for 121 yards and 4 scores, three of which can in the first half, and Harrisburg never struggled on their way to a 36-7 win to advance in the PIAA District Playoffs with a punishing run game. “Mahkai was phenomenal today, offensively, defensively and kicking PAT’s. He had a lot of points for us today” said Harrisburg head coach Calvin Everett.

The game for the Cougars was never really in doubt, they came out of the gates fast when Freshman QB Shawn Lee hit a 65 on a yard pass play, then Hopkins finished from the one. He also has kicking duties so his point after gave the Cougars a fast 7-0 lead. Then after the Cougars swarming defense forced a three and out with a punt, they marched 65 yards and again Hopkins scored from the one.

“Harrisburg played a hell of game. They’re a good team. Their team speed gave us fits all day” said Carlisle head coach Brett Ickes. Speed didn’t play a role on Harrisburgs next score. It was the field position game. Hopkins buried a punt deep at the one, but couldn’t muster much offense. Terrell Reynolds ended any hope of a drive when he sacked Carlisle qb Louis Shank for a big loss. After the punt the Cougars only needed 32 yards for their next score, this one a 3 yard run by Hopkins.

Holding a 21 yard lead late in the second, the Cougars got their second interception of the half. Kyle Williams played the tip drill perfectly and ran an interception back 25 yards to put the Cougars up 28-0 at the half. The Herd made a few adjustments at the break and came out smoking hot in the third quarter, driving 70 yards to get within 21 points, but the field position game bit them again. The Cougars drove the length of the field, but a fumble ended that drive at the Carlisle 10.  Terrell Reynolds ended the Herd drive by blocking a punt that went out of the endzone for a safety putting Harrisburg up 30-7.

Hopkins closed out the scoring with an 8 yard run.  Terrell is a special player. He’s our sack leader and we’ve had a lot of great ones that have played for Harrisburg. For Terrell to be he sack leader here at Harrisburg, that says a lot about him” said Everett.  For Carlisle, their season ends with a record of 7-4. “Hey, I’m proud of these guys” said Ickes. “A lot of people picked us to be dead last in the conference.”

Harrisburg will have another home game next Saturday at 1 against Hempfield.
