Bishop McDevitt cruises to victory 47 to 7 Friday night over Mechanicsburg at Rocco Ortenzio Stadium behind a strong dominating defensive performance and offensive ground control throughout the evening in this District 3 Class 5A Quarter-Final Matchup !

The game started off partly cloudy with just a little bit of wind that wasn’t much of a factor on the night. McDevitt’s defense showed its strength right from the get go, forcing the Wildcats into a three and out on their first possession to begin the game. McDevitt wasted no time putting points on the board on their first drive, going 49 yards on just 6 plays, capped off with the first of 3 touchdowns from the senior RB-Maurice Barnes Jr. to go up 7 to 0 with 8:03 to go in the first quarter.

Mechanicsburg put together a decent drive on their next possession beginning at their own 35, going all the way down to the Crusader 20 only to fumble on a 2nd an 2 play, recovered by McDevitt’s senior DB-Tyler Reinhart. The Crusaders managed to get all the way down to the Wildcats 25 before having to settle for a long 42 yard field goal made by the senior K-Aidan Grella, with 10:05 left in the first half, went on to make two field goals on the evening, both 42 yarders. The score now 10 to 0 !

McDevitt seemed to control every aspect of this game with the exception of one area, PENALTIES, 6 in the first half alone. Coach Weachter talked about it after the game and was not very pleased about the amount of flags his team was called for. The games next score came with a big defensive stop by the Wildcats, and a blocked punt deep in Crusader territory, landing in the end-zone, recovered by the big DE-Drake Dawson to cut the lead to 10 to 7 McDevitt over halfway through the second quarter. McDevitt wasn’t to be outdone just yet, on their next possession, Maurice Barnes once again from 1 yard out this time to put the Crusaders back on top by 10, 17 to 7 with 2:26 to go till the half. McDevitt added another 3 points on the board as time expired in the first half when Aidan Grella nailed his 2nd 42 yard FG on the night giving us a 20 to 7 halftime lead for the Crusaders.

Bishop McDevitt went on to add another touchdown quickly on the board coming out the locker room in the 3rd quarter when Junior QB-Sabastian Williams took the ball himself for 15 yards for the score and extending the lead to 26 to 7 with 10:23 to go in the third following the failed PAT.

Barnes Jr. scored his final touchdown of the game on the Crusaders next offensive possession following a big defensive score by Senior DB-Patrick Wright scooped up the Wildcat fumble and rambled in for the score, adding to the lead now at 33 to 7 for the Crusaders.

McDevitt’s next score came when Barnes took the handoff and scampered 27 yards with 1:05 still to go in the third quarter, leading 40 to 7 over Mechanicsburg. Mechanicsburg ended the quarter with a big sack by the senior DL-Chris Thompson to force the Wildcats into a 4th and 14 situation to begin the final quarter of play. A turnover on downs set up the games final score when senior Shaheed Clement came into the game and scored from 2 yards out to make the score 47 to 7 with 9:50 to go in the game, eventually ending the game with the same score.

After the game, I was able to catch up to Coach Weachter for a quick few words, and get us out of the drizzling rain that started just before Halftime !
