District 3 Mid Season Report

Welcome to the weekly District 3 report. Let’s get right to the highlights of the season thus far!

As of now there is a whopping 12 undefeated teams sitting at 5-0 but that’ll all change this weekend. Fleetwood takes on Wyomissing, Warwick takes on Cedar Crest and Wilson hosts Manheim Township in three battles of unbeaten teams.

We’ll start with the L-L:

So far the biggest surprise is the defending 5A champs sitting at 3-2.  They’ve gone down to some powerful teams in Warwick and Wilson. Will be interesting to see if the Barons can get back to title team form.

Another team that has kind of fallen off is Berks Catholic. But don’t count out the Saints quite yet. Those loses were to a tough CD Rams and powerhouse McDonogh. They got a nice win over Malvern and have somewhat of an easy stretch until mid October when Fleetwood and Wyomissing will be waiting for them.

Fleetwood has been a nice surprise. So have the Spartans of Wyomissing, who just win number 500 for the program. (Area and High). And how about Lampeter-Strasburg?? Not typically an explosive team but they’ve been mowing them down this year.  Both teams lead the 4A class in the D3 power rankings.

Warwick shocked the world, well, kinda. Their win over the Barons put them on the map again. Ok they were never off the map, and the only quality win they have is that thumping they gave the Barons. We’ll find out what they’re made of as they have a murderers row of Cedar Crest, Township and Wilson in their next three games.

Wyomissing.  Wow. First they give Pottsville their only mark, then North Schuykill but it gets real this week with a trip to Fleetwood.

Lancaster Catholic found the loss column for the first time last week with what some might say was a surprise loss to the Cedars. It’s nice to see a team like Donegal shooting for a playoff spot at 4-0. Always strong Cocalico is right there at 4-1 as well.

Over in the Mid Penn:

Well, you THOUGHT this might be the year someone catches Middletown, you thought.  But first you have to catch Jose Lopez. With a 103 yard int return and nearly 700 yards rushing with 6 tds.  That’s with missing a game.  The Raiders are coming off a nice win over Steel High and look like a contender again. Milton Hershey at 4-1 could be the team to catch the Raiders in two weeks.  Trinity could surprise with QB Danny Scott leading the way. He’s thrown for over 1,300 yards and 13 tds. But first they have to get past Milton Hershey this weekend.

In the Colonial, Shippensburg is leading the pack at 5-0. Looking at their schedule they have a good shot to win out with Northern and West Perry struggling to keep above .500. Bishop McDevitt and Miffco have been somewhat disappointing this year after the Huskies and Crusaders had nice runs in 2018.  Kyle Swartz at Northern is over the 800 yard mark in rushing.

The always strong Commonwealth is what I would call the toughest league in the state. State College sits at the top at 5-0 with Harrisburg coming to town next weekend. The gives them one week to get a sputtering at times offense on track.  The Cougars are second and have a tough one with Central Dauphin this weekend. Harrisburg looks strong with that dual qb system but lost star athlete Donte Kent indefinitely.

In the Keystone, Township, Mechanicsburg, Red Land and Cedar Cliff are shooting it out. Jaheim Morris is a back that colleges should be watching over at Cedar Cliff.  Nearing the 800 yard mark, he’s carrying the load for them. Susquehanna QB Rahsaan Carlton is having a nice year with 800 yards passing and 8 tds.

In the York-Adams Conference:

Division 1

Manny Capo has the 5-0 Bobcats of Northeastern running wild on opponents. He’s hit the 200 mark 3 times this season. Over at Central York, Beau Pribula sat out a game and the Panthers still rolled. These two teams are heading for a major week 8 clash. York High opened with a thumping to WPIAL power Central Catholic, then lost a tough one to Cedar Crest before rebounding. They’re knotted in a tie with South Western at the top.

Division 2

York Suburban has been impressive thus far, and got a nice win over Kennard-Dale last week to remain undefeated. They should make it to 7-0 when they face Gettysburg. The Warriors are a pound and ground team with a stingy defense once again, only giving up 11 points per game. Kennard-Dale could make some noise here but they already lost to Suburban and the Warriors await.

Division 3

Delone Catholic leads the way at 2-0 in the conference. Right there with them is Bermudian Springs. The Squires started off a shocking 0-3 but those losses came to Trinity, Steel High and Suburban. Littlestown and York Catholic are next in line here.
