East Penn jumps out to big lead and finishes off York Suburban

East Penn head coach John Denniston praised the turnover battle his team won Friday night. That battle helped the Panthers jump out to a 30-0 lead enroute to a 30-6 win against Suburban in the York Rose Bowl Classic. “We live and die by turnovers. It’s our #1 metric and we’ve been pretty good with it the last couple years”.
The scoring didn’t all come from turnovers. The Panthers set the tone early with a game opening, 80 yard drive capped by a 2 yard td run by Paul Sanderson.

On the ensuing drive, CJ Rissmiller lost the ball and Ahmar Lumbard recovered the loose ball at the 29 of York. JJ Gossard and just like that it was 14-0 Panthers. East Pennsboro scored on their first three possessions. On their next, it was a beautiful 45 yard run after the catch by Gossard to put the Panthers up 21-0 on the first play of the second quarter.

Ali Alami hit a 29 yard field goal with 9 minutes to go in the half making it a 24-0 lead for the Panthers. With 4:02 left in the second, the Panthers capped their scoring with a 3 yard run by quarterback Keith Oates. The two point attempt failed leaving the score 30-0 at the half.
Suburban got on the board with a crazy play when QB Rylan Bratton pulled a ball that got popped loose from the running back out of the air and scampered 45 yards for the final score of the game.
“You can’t give a team like that turnovers and great field position and expect to win” said Suburban head coach Josh Fry.
For the Panthers, Gossard had 78 yards on the ground via 18 carries, Oates had 222 yards on a 12 of 22 effort with 2 tds. One other star, Trey Good, lived up to his billing hauling in 4 passes for 103 yards including a beautiful 50 yard catch that set up the first score.
Suburban has Donegal next week. East Penn travels to Palmyra.
