YORK, PA – Eastern York inched closer to capturing the YAIAA Division 2 co-championship on Friday night at York Suburban. The Trojans, who came into the game 0-8, haven’t found much success this season and were looking for any ounce of hope, especially on senior night.

That hope came in the second play, when Everett Heim recovered a fumble from the Golden Knights, giving the Trojans the ball on their own 20-yard line. However, they didn’t get much momentum and turned it over on downs. Then, Nuhsi Valenti ran 52 yards for Eastern’s first touchdown of the night. On the next drive, York Suburban had to punt the ball away. The Trojans got lucky on Eastern’s next drive when the Golden Knights fumbled the ball on York Suburban’s 1-yard line. But, Rylan Bratton wasn’t able to get the Trojans more than a couple of yards, forcing them to punt it away. With only 11 seconds left in the quarter, Ethan Sgrignoli ran it 1 yard for another Eastern touchdown. The first quarter ended 14-0.

The second quarter started with a decent driver from York Suburban, however, they were stopped by the Golden Knights’ defense. Both teams went back and forth with possession of the ball, but Eastern was able to score on a 51-yard rushing play from Draven Becknauld. It was 21-0 with 4 minutes left in the game, and the Golden Knights still weren’t done scoring in the first half. Eastern’s kicker Landon Heiland tacked on 3 more for Eastern from a 31-yard field goal to end the first half at 24-0.

The third quarter was more of the Eastern York dominance. At 8:27, Nuhsi Valenti ran 1 yard for his second touchdown of the night, making it 31-0. Then, 6 minutes later, Donte Lewis ran 13 yards for a touchdown to make it 38-0.

York Suburban found some success in the fourth quarter, but not before Eastern’s Quez Robinson found the endzone on a 20-yard run. At this point, Eastern had taken out most of their starters on both sides of the ball. York Suburban’s Taza Sweeney was the lone scorer for the Trojans from a 5-yard run. The game ended 45-7.

With the win, Eastern advances to 8-1 and travels to New Oxford next week, where with a win, they will become Division 2 co-champions. York Suburban falls to 0-9 and will travel to winless Northeastern, who may be their only hope for a victory.
