An empty stadium at halftime that was, 15 minutes prior to this shot, full of excited fans.
It was an historic run. The Fleetwood Tigers had gone 5-0 for the first time in program history with a very strong, 5-0 Wyomissing team storming in to town to play before an absolutely packed house. Unfortunately for the fans the Spartans weren’t the only thing heading to town for homecoming. By the end of the first half word was swirling all over the stadium that a large storm was coming. Immediately after the Homecoming ceremony, it was announced that the storm was approaching with heavy lightening and thunder so they had no choice but to delay the game and empty the stadium with the Spartans up 21-0. The game was then postponed until 2pm Sunday. Wyomissing picked up where it left off and thundered to a 35-7 win ending the Tigers longest winning streak in history.
On Friday night:
Max Hurleman returned a punt 16 yards to the 44 yard line. Eight plays later Jevin Tranquillo bulled his way into the endzone after a 13 yard run, the pat failed leaving the score 6-0

It wasn’t long before Tranquillo made his presence known again, recovering a fumble to put the Spartans in scoring position again at the Fleetwood 20. Evan Niedrowski plunged in from the two and then Wyomissing got the two point play making it 14-0 with 4:15 left in the first quarter.

The Tigers sprang to life after recovering a fumble by Hurleman. A nice first down pass by QB Charlie Maddocks, then a big run for another first down but that momentum came to a crashing halt when Nevin Carter picked off Maddocks at the 28. Hurleman broke loose for a 50 yard TD run that was called back, so the Spartans went heavy and drove 15 plays for the last score of the night, Niedrowski’s second was from three yards out. Then the rain came.
Sunday afternoon:
“I preached that we can’t make the mistakes that we made the last three weeks against a team like Wyomissing”said Head Coach Sean Gaul. “The kids were really excited to play today and it show’s their willingness to prove people wrong. We came out fired up but unfortunately we ran into a really tough Wyomissing team.
Much like the storm the night before, the Spartans rolled right through Ray Bus Field and the Tiger defense on their opening drive. Niedrowski got his third td of the game on a 5 yard run. Hurleman closed out the scoring for Wyomissing with a 5 yard run. Maddocks scored from 2 yards out for the Tigers for the final score of the game. “I’m curious to see what kind team we’re going to see on Monday, how they will respond.”
The Spartans outgained Fleetwood 336-176. Niedrowski carried 21 times for 101 yards and 3 tds. Hurleman had 12 carries for 90 yards. For Fleetwood, Maddocks threw for 112 yards with 2 ints and ran for another 50.
Wyomissing will take their 6-0 record to Hamburg next week while the Tigers will look to continue their historic season with a rebound at Schuykill Valley.
BIG THANKS To Reading Eagle top guy Mike Drago for helping me close out the game!
