Garden Spot cruises to 48-0 win at Central Mountain

The game between a Lancaster Lebanon team and a PHAC team 3 hours north came about when the LL league combined with Berks and it left some teams scrambling to fill a couple open dates. Spartan head coach Matt Zamperini, being from Dubois, was familiar with the northern region and didn’t mind that Central Mountain had an opening. They filled the date last year with a home and home series. The Wildcats are probably wishing Zamperini wasn’t from Dubois, and didn’t have an open date.  Garden Spot jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and finished the game with a bizarre play by back up QB Owen Sauder who lost the snap, barely scooped it up, scrambled through a crowd of Wildcats and ran 35 yards to set the final score at 48-0 as the clock hit 00:0.

The Spartans, who racked up over 400 yards of offense, got things rolling straight of the opening kick. Senior quarterback Kye Harting dinked and dunked the Spartans down the field for a 7 play, 60 yard scoring drive that was capped by a seven yard td run by Trenton Hoober. The game really didn’t start out that bad for the Wildcats offensively. Senior Rocco Serafini nearly single handedly got the Wildcats to the Spartan 22 but he was dropped for a one yard loss on fourth down. That was as close to the endzone as the Wildcats would get all night.

One play later Harting hit a wide open Gabe Martin on a wheel route and he went the distance, 35 yards, to put the Spartans up 14-0 midway through the first quarter. “You never know where your kids are going to be after losing a game like we did last week where you lay out every ounce and fall a little bit short” said Zamperini after the game. “For these guys we’re still rebuilding so it was good for them to get over the hump like that”.

During the game, there really was only one hump to get over for the Spartans, the goal line. After the defense forced a punt, it took just two more plays to find that “hump”. Harting threw td pass number two, a 57 yard touchdown pass that should have only gone for a few yards but for a nice spin move by Hoober to get loose and go the distance. With just 1:24 left in the first quarter the game was pretty much already out of reach.

In all, Harting had a hand in 3 tds, the last coming on an eight yard run after hitting Jace Conrad for a 46 yard gain. Harting was 8-10 for 181 yards, with 2 tds and an interception. He also ran for 46 yards and the score. “Kye is a handful running and passing” said Zamperini of his quarterbacks performance. Garden Spot finished off the first half scoring with a 3 yard run by Andrew Pemberton.

Central opened the second half with a drive that saw the Spartans lose not one, but two punts by the Wildcats on first a blocked punt that was recovered by the Cats, then a muffed punt, but Hoober continued his great night by intercepting Thomas Sprague and returning the rock to the 33. Later in that drive Nathan Eberly broke loose on the sideline for a 19 yard td run.

Garden Spot, who is now in a tie for first in their conference after Twin Valley lost to Ephrata last night, will line up against Elizabethtown at home next week. Central Mountain will go for their third win of the season hosting 0-7 Midd-West.
