Harrisburg downs Manheim Twp to advance

“We’ve been here before, we have more work to do”. That’s about as simple as it got for Harrisburg head coach Calvin Everett. His Cougars defeated Manheim Township 35-14 to advance to the PIAA District III Class 6A title game against Wilson next week. The win was convincing but it wasn’t easy.

Harrisburg jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on a 21 yard td run by Messiah Mickens. The 8 play drive covered 80 yards but the lead didn’t last long.

On the ensuing kick Daryus Dixon returned the ball to the Harrisburg 17, a 63 yard return. Three plays later he laid out for a beautiful 20 yard td catch that tied the score at 7 with 6:29 left in the first quarter.

Elias Cody-Coke gave the Cougars a 14-7 lead with his 41 yard td catch from Jaiyon Lewis on the next drive. This time the Cougars had to overcome a couple penalties to get the score. Running behind Penn State recruit Kevin Brown, who returned from injury after missing pretty much the entire regular season, Mickens plowed through the Township defense before the Coke td reception. “I’m so glad to come back. I hated watching my team play while I couldn’t be out there.”

Township responded with a 59 yard drive aided by several Harrisburg penalties. With the ball at the Cougar 15 Carson Weisser hit Lex Haberbosch for a 10 yard td to tie the game at 14. Then the Cougars caught a break. After a couple penalties and a sack pinned them with fourth and long the Cougars punted but the Manheim receiver muffed the kick and Harrisburg recovered on the 14. One play later Mickens, who rushed for 146 yard and three tds, was in the endzone and Harrisburg never looked back.

The Cougars had another chance to score before the half but just couldn’t get the ball into the endzone. Starting the second half with the ball it looked as though Township was going to make a game of it but a field goal attempt missed it’s mark. After the teams exchanged punts, Mickens got his third td of the night, an eight yard run in the fourth quarter to make it 28-14 Cougars. Nehemiah Ewell closed out the scoring with a short td run.

“They always do their job. But with Kevin being back they took it to a new level” said Mickens of the play of the offensive line for Harrisburg.
