Wilsons Jadyn Jones rushes the ball in Saturday’s 14-10 loss to Harrisburg. Saturday, November 20, 2021.

The Harrisburg Cougars and Wilson Bulldogs faced off Saturday afternoon in the District 3 6A Championship game with Cougars Freshman quarterback Shawn Lee leading the way on offense with two touchdowns in a nail bitter victory 14-10.

To start the game the Cougar’s defense came out strong. On fourth down, Micah Chambers burst through and got a sack forcing a turnover on downs at the 33-yard line. However, the Cougar’s offense struggled to gain yards against the Stout Bulldog defense. The Bulldogs would be the first to score any points in the game. Kicker Ben Rada nailed a 24-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. The Cougars tried to respond but a missed pass resulted in a Bulldog interception by Ryan McMillan with 45 seconds left in the first half.

To start the second half the Cougar’s offense came out strong. Lee would score from one yard out on a dive play to give the Cougars a 7-3 lead midway through the third quarter.

“The biggest thing was that we were hurting ourselves in the first half. Especially from an offensive standpoint. We let up three points in the first half, we had to eliminate penalties and run the ball.” Said Head Coach Calvin Everett.

The Bulldogs wasted no time responding to the Cougars score. On the very next play Bulldogs, Jadyn Jones burst through the middle for a 16-yard touchdown. After the made pat the score was 10-7 Bulldogs. The Bulldogs kept momentum as on the following possession Lee fumbled the snap and it was recovered by Bulldogs Logan Kurzweg. The Cougar’s defense stood out once again forcing a turnover on downs at the 28-yard line.

Lee would score his second touchdown of the game on the ensuing possession. After a constant ground and pound game by Mahkai Hopkins, Lee capped off the drive with a seven-yard keeper. After the pat, the score was 14-10 with 9:24 to go in the fourth quarter.

“We just had to get comfortable, it was a big game so we had to get used to it and we overcame it” Said Lee after the game. The Cougar’s defense came up with another huge stop forcing a turnover on downs with a little over a minute to go and holding on to a close 14-10 victory.

For the Wilson Bulldogs, their season has unfortunately come to an end, but not without a fight. Taking down Central York and battling to the end against a good Harrisburg team. For the Cougars, they will face State College in a rematch that Harrisburg won 15-13 next week.
