Both teams came into tonight’s game hoping to end their season on a high note. Last week, the Reading Red Knights fell to 1-8 on the season after being shut out by Central York. The Hempfield Black Knights also suffered a loss, making their record 2-7. Tonight, Hempfield finished their season with a dominating 46 to 7 win over Reading.

Reading received the opening kickoff and started their first drive from their own 42 yard line. After a few solid runs from running back Alexis Alvarado and a couple nice passes from quarterback Kayson Fritz, the Red Knights found themselves at the Hempfield 13. However, their 16 play drive ended four plays later and resulted in no points after they failed to pick up a 4th and 12 from their own 15 yard line.

Hempfield’s first drive of the night began at their own 15 yard line. Wide receiver Micah Gates had a big 20 yard play to start the drive and then running back Eli Walls broke off a 45 yard rush which set up Hempfield at the Reading 15. Walls gained another 14 yards and then finished the drive off with a one-yard touchdown, giving the Black Knights a seven-point lead.

Reading’s next drive resulted in a punt and Hempfield got the ball back on their own 17 yard line. Quarterback Jackson Landis found tight end Phillip Krauser for a big gain, but Krauser fumbled the football while being tackled and Reading recovered.

The Red Knights took over at their own eight yard line but Hempfield forced a three and out and Reading was forced to punt again.

After a short punt, Hempfield started their next drive on the Reading 37 yard line. The Black Knights put together a quick six-play drive capped off by a 19-yard touchdown pass from Landis to tight end David Ennis. Hempfield missed the extra point, keeping the score at 13 to zero.

Reading was set up with great field position on their third drive of the night. Alvarado ripped off a 17 yard run on the drive that set up Reading at the Hempfield 20 yard line. However, on the next play, Fritz was intercepted by Hempfield’s Derek Katch.

After the interception, Landis found Gates for a 92 yard touchdown that gave Hempfield a 20 point lead.

Reading finally answered back when Xavier Beatty broke off Evan Manning’s tackle and returned the kickoff for a touchdown. Hempfield’s lead was now only 13 with 2:38 remaining in the first half.

The Black Knights wasted no time finding the endzone again. Their next drive was just six plays and Landis finished it off with a 13 yard rushing touchdown. This gave Hempfield a 27 to seven lead at the half.

The second half was more of the same. On just the third play after the half, Landis found Brayden Charles for a 49 yard touchdown, giving Hempfield a 33-to-seven lead. At this point, the game was pretty much out of reach for the Red Knights.

Reading struggled for the rest of the night to get anything going on offense while Hempfield continued to pile on the points. Eli Walls and Jackson Landis both scored another rushing touchdown, making the lead grow to 39.

Landis completed his final game in a Hempfield jersey with 339 passing yards, 44 rushing yards, and five total touchdowns. After the game, Landis said “We knew we were eliminated from the playoffs, and it was our last game, so we didn’t want to go out with a loss. There was no way we were going to lose this game.”

Hempfield defeated Reading 46 to 7 and finished a disappointing season with a record of 3-7.
