ROUNDTRIP – 470 MILES

Thursday, October 10

My quadrupleheader of games this week began with a matchup of 3A North Schuylkill and 4A Blue Mountain in District 11 Schuylkill League play.  North Schuylkill entered the contest as underdogs looking to improve their position in District standings and while Blue Mountain presented a difficult assignment for the visiting Spartans they were up to the task thanks in part to a stellar game from RB/DB Luke Miller.

Miller accounted for three touchdowns on the night with two on offense and a pick six on defense.  The Spartan Junior was seemingly all over the field on the night and came up with big play after big play to vault his team to the road victory.

Here’s a couple highlights from Luke Miller’s big night at Blue Mountain…

Friday, October 11

Despite my preference for high-flying high school offenses my guilty pleasure is watching the ultra-efficient Wing-T Wyomissing Spartans play football and what better opportunity to do so than their matchup with undefeated and District 3 Lancaster-Lebanon League foe Twin Valley.  The showdown of state ranked #7 Wyomissing and #5 Twin Valley featured the contrasting slow and steady running game of Wyomissing and the high temp offense of Twin Valley and on this night the turtle beat the hare once again as the Spartans picked up a solid 34-24 victory over the Raiders.

Watching Wyomissing play a football game is a study in efficiency on the gridiron.  For years now, led by legendary head coach Bob Wolfrum, rarely does the program drop a game due to mental errors or penalties.  Their players and coaches are over-prepared for every obstacle an opponent has to offer and their sometimes robotic nature on both sides of the ball produces endless lengthy drives on offense and form tackling perfection on defense.

Saturday, October 12

One day prior both games I attended were won by a team named Spartans and if I was a betting man I should have put down a sawbuck on both games I attended on Saturday to be won by teams named Eagles.

Game #1 on Saturday featured the heavy underdogs Cumberland Valley Eagles (3-4) visiting #5 state ranked Harrisburg Cougars (6-1).  To be wholly honest I only attended the game because I enjoy Saturday afternoon games at Severance Field and it’s only an hour drive to get there.  Little did I expect the visiting Eagles to pull off a monster upset against the talented Cougars.

Cumberland Valley tallied three interceptions on defense in the first half and cashed all of them in for 21 points on offense.  A 21-7 lead held up for the Eagles and they walked away with a 24-21 victory to even their season record at 4-4 while stunning the home Harrisburg crowd.

Bonus segment…

The action off the field was as hot as on the field as both bands from Cumberland Valley and Harrisburg are highly talented.  Check out the Eagles and Cougars marching bands…

The second half of my Saturday was a showcase of one of the most talented and highly touted quarterbacks in the Commonwealth in Nazareth Senior signal-caller Peyton Falzone who is slated to join the Virginia Tech football team next season.

Falzone put on an absolute show in the first half and was flawless in his throws all night.  The 6’5″, 200 pound Falzone put pass after pass exactly on the mark tossing for four touchdowns and 245 yards through two quarters.  With a running clock due to the mercy rule and a 36 point lead Nazareth called off the dogs in the second half en route to a solid 36-7 victory to improve to 6-2 on their campaign.

Here’s some impressive first half highlights from Peyton Falzone’s night vs. Bethlehem Catholic…
