The Mifflin County winning streak moves to three.  With a thrilling comeback, the Huskies secured their third win of the season, taking down the Indians of Waynesboro in a thrilling 33-21 double overtime game that saw the homecoming team erase a 14 point deficit in the last 8 minutes of the game. “Our kids have a lot of heart. They just found a way to win” said Husky head coach Scott Sechler. “I can’t just pick one or two guys that deserve a game ball. There were a bunch of them out there.”

We couldn’t pick one either. Noah Wright threw for 245 yards, Gage Schaeffer ran for 127 yards and ran for 50 more, Nathan Poche tallied 50 yards and 2 tds, and Julian Jackson caught 5 passes for 119 yards. The four named were a crucial group that engineered the comeback in thrilling fashion so for the first time we chose FOUR players of the game.

“We talked before the game, me and Schaeffer. We said we had to have a big game to get the win and we did” said Poche of his game winning td in double overtime”

Trailing 21-7 with just over 9 minutes to play, Wright and Jackson began an incredible air show with the later making 2 amazing catches to get to the 22 yard line where Schaeffer would finish the drive to make it 21-13 with 8:03 to play. The crucial kick after was no good, and that miss eventually set up the overtime.

The game started off great for the visiting Indians. One their first drive, Jay Alvarez moved his team 75 yards to go up 7-0 on a 29 yard pass to Johnny Hoffman. Hoffman made 2 great catches in the drive, both saw him extend and beat out great coverage for first a 39 yard catch, then the td.

Following a punt by both teams, Mifflin County made the first mistake of the game when Wright attempted a lateral pass that sailed and was recovered at the 20 by Waynsboro at the end of the first quarter. It took just one play, a 25 yard run from Quentin Gaskill. The point after made it 14-0. Gaskill ran for 108 yards and 1 td on the night.

 

Mifflin County then drove 80 yards to come within 7 on a Schaeffer 11 yard run with 7:42 left in the first half and that’s where the score remained before homecoming ceremonies began. “He’s

Waynesboro opened the second half with a 69 yard drive to pull ahead by 14. Then the scoring stopped. It became a defensive battle until the foursome of Wright, Schaeffer, Poche and Jackson began the heroics.

With momentum on their side following the score that made it 21-13, the Huskies defense forced the Indians to punt, giving the home team the ball at their 40. Once again Wright and Jackson connected, this time for 20 and 15 yards, sandwiching a crucial 10 yard run by Wright. Facing a third down at the Indian 13, Wright and Jackson tried to hook up again but failed, however, a pass interference call gave them the ball at the 7. Poche finished the comeback with a 7 yard plunge to make it a 21-19 game, and tied it with a 2 point run at the 3 minute mark setting up the eventual overtime. “If you give him just a little bit of room he’ll make the play, but you have to credit our line, they made that hole” said Sechler.

Disclaimer: On a night I forgot my quick charger for my Iphone, I got what I deserved: A double OT game that saw my battery hit 1% with 1 minute left in the game. Luckily, someone heard my cry. I want to give a HUGE thank you to Miffco teacher Sonya Riden who let me borrow hers…without her, I’d have not been able to record the two overtimes. THANK YOU!!

The Huskies struck first on a beautiful fourth down throw from Wright to Schaeffer sending the huge home crowd into a frenzy. They were then silenced as Waynesboro block the pat. It took just one play, a Jay Alvarez to Logan Smith to tie it again. But it seemed fate was with the Huskies as they too blocked the point after kick.

Here the Mifflin County defense stood tall. Brycen Hassinger intercepted a tipped pass in the endzone setting up this Poche td for the win:

 

“It’s just tough. Hard to swallow” said Indians Head Coach Steve Myers. “They played tough, that’s the second time this year we lost on a missed extra point.
