Lampeter-Strasburg survives scare, scores 10 unanswered points to win thriller in overtime 30 to 27 over the Wyomissing Spartans.

Pioneers’ Dominic Brown scores the first points of the game with this 1 yard touchdown run.

The Pioneers would get the ball to begin the game, a 7 play drive for 41 yards, capped off with a 7 yard touchdown run by Dominic Brown would put L-S up 7 to 0 with 9:33 to go in the first quarter.

Now it was the Spartans turn to make some noise but their first drive would come up short going just four plays for 4 yards. The next drive for the Pioneers didn’t go like the first with L-S going 3 and out following a big sack by Max Tipton for a loss of 6 yards.

Two plays later for the Spartans, would fumble on the play, recovered by the Pioneers’ Cole Lopez, setting up the next score for Lampeter-Strasburg, an 8 play drive followed by a Peter Fiorello field goal of 33 yards, extending the Pioneer lead to 10 to 0 with 3:33 left to go in the 1st. quarter.

That would be the only scoring in the quarter, while Wyomissing was driving as the quarter ended with the score still 10 to 0. Just 3 plays into the second quarter, the Spartans would answer with a 25 yard touchdown run by Chase Eisenhower, closing the gap to 10 to 7 with 10:47 to go until halftime.

The Pioneers offense would struggle the rest of the way till halftime, with the next drive going just 4 plays with an intentional grounding penalty following a big loss on a run play by Brown. The next score of the game would come with 2:05 left in the half when Wyomissing’s Derek Macrina would take off for 37 yards for the score to put the Spartans in the lead 14 to 10, eventually the score at halftime.

Wyo would get the ball the start the second half but couldn’t come up with any momentum they may have had going into the half. L-S would score next with 8:44 to play in the 3rd when a pass from quarterback Caileb Howse for 33 yards would put the Pioneers back on top 17 to 14. L-S would extend the lead once again when kicker Fiorello would connect again, this time for 41 yards, making the score now 20 to 14 with 9:17 to play in the game.

The Spartans would respond with 6:52 to go when Chase Eisenhower would score his second touchdown of the game, setting up a PAT to take back the lead only to have the kick blocked. The score tied at 20 a piece.
The Spartans defense would tighten up on the Pioneers next drive holding them to just 22 yards, forcing a punt with under 4 minutes to play in the game. Tyler Neidrowski wasted no time, going 80 yards on the first play of the drive to put the Spartans back on top with 3:15 to play.

It was at this time my phone took a dump and I wasn’t able to record the final plays of the game tying drive by the Pioneers, going 55 yards on 9 plays capped off by a HUGE scramble run completion by quarterback Howse in which he completed the pass for 15 yards on 4th and 14 to Mason Hostetter, followed by a 5 yard touchdown pass to Christian Nolt to tie the game at 27 a piece with just :28 seconds to play, heading into overtime.

In overtime, the Pioneers won the toss and elected to go on defense, a great decision it seemed when they would force a field goal which was made but a roughing the kicker penalty would negate the kick and give the Spartans new life with a first and goal at the 4 yard. None the less, the Spartans weren’t able to punch it in and would have to settle for another field goal attempt to put Wyo on top, unfortunately for the Spartans, the kick would be blocked and L-S would take over and immediately would set up for the game winning field goal. A penalty on Wyomissing would give the Pioneers even closer field position for the game winning kick which would be drilled, giving Lampeter-Strasburg their first District 3 Championship since they went back to back in 2019 and 2020 seasons. During pre-game warmups, kicker Fiorello nailing 35+ yard field goals from all angles.

The loss by the Spartans ends a 5 year District 3 championship streak which were all in Cass 3A. Wyomissing’s season ends with a 10-3 record in their first season at Class 4A. With the victory, the Pioneers will face the winner of tomorrow afternoon’s game between Clearfield and Thomas Jefferson, both undefeated at 12-0.
