Teams in section:
Kutztown, Northern Lebanon, Hamburg, Schuylkill Valley, Anneville-Cleona, Lancaster Catholic, Pequea Valley, Columbia

Teams to Beat for the Section title– Lancaster Catholic Coach Maiorino enters his 3rd year as a head coach for the Crusaders. His program has steadily improved from 2 to 4 wins and is now looking to make the leap in the new section 5.
Coach Chris Maiorino- “New section and Berks county teams are new to us, but very excited to play them. Excited to see this group of Seniors mature over the last three years”.

Columbia– New Head Coach Brady Mathias takes over the program from Bud Kyle. Robert Footman might have moved on, but still, plenty of playmakers are available for the Crimson Tide to compete for this section title.
Dominic Diez-Ellis WR/DB-”Absolutely taking week 1 is very personable for us against Eastern York. Goal is to win the section again and go further in playoffs”.

Hamburg– The Hawks are coming off of a 7-4 season. Their first winning season since the 2016 season. Now Hamburg joins a very wide open section 5. “We expect to compete every week with high energy and effort. We have a good mix of returning players to lead the way. We lost a few key contributors from last season but I expect our younger players to step up.”

Rice and Northern Lebanon should be in the race in the wild open section 5. “We head into the 2022 football season with a good combination of youth and experience. We have a small senior class but they all return with experience. Our junior and sophomore classes are loaded up with promising talent in both skill and big positions. Schuylkill Valley- Head coach Bruce Harbaugh says  “Our goals remain the same: Stay healthy, be competitive, have a winning season, win the section, make playoffs, win districts, make state playoffs. 17-18 Starters returning. Good offensive line. Solid skill position players. Best skill group I’ve had since 2011 at LC .Very quick running backs. Have to protect the football. Defensive front should be quite good. LB’s and secondary are improving. Have to get better at stopping the run. Have to teach these kids how to win and change the culture of the program. Experienced coaching staff will help. We want to be competitive and establish a solid running game to compliment our improving passing game, Minimize turnovers and put our players in a position to win football games. Very Talented overall group on both sides of the ball returning. Reminds me of my 2011 State Championship team at LC. We will challenge for the Section 5 Championship.

New Head Coach in Section 5:
Brady Mathias Columbia: Mathias is taking over for Bud Kyle who helped lead Columbia to the first section title in 20 years. The good news is Mathias has been on staff for the last two years. The other positive news is he is a teacher in the district. He is also returning a ton of production from last year’s team.
Mathias- “Been good transition for me. Something to benefit us is me being on staff. And we know what to expect from each of the players. Brought back a few members from last year’s staff to stay on and help as well.“

Matt Hoffert Hamburg- Hoffert has big shoes to fill replacing Jeff Chillot who guided the Hawks to the District quarter-finals last year. Longtime assistant Hoffert is a Hamburg alum, looking to keep the momentum going from 2021.
