It was a rare Saturday night season opener for Manheim Twp. and CD East. Being in the spotlight is nothing new for Township. The Blue Streaks were a 6A semi-finalist last year. For the young Panthers, the spotlight was not to bright. CD East came out and slugged it out toe to toe with Township. In the end the Blue Streaks proved to be to much and Manheim Township downed CD East 17-10.
Defense ruled the night for both teams. But the performances of Manheim Townships Josh and Sam Emge stood out. The turning point of the game was 2nd quarter sack and forced fumble by Sam. The turnover resulted in a 62 yard scoop and score by Bryce Casey and put the Blue Streaks out in front for good.
Manheim Township Head Coach Mark Evans seemed very satisfied with his teams defense and running game performances. “our guys up front were athletic, I knew (CD East) they were big, I knew they were strong, we used our quickness and athleticism, I am very pleased with our guys.” Coach Evans also talked about his new starting QB Harrison Kirk. “you know what, some growing pains, as with any time with live bullets…all things considered, there are a lot of things he can grow on.”
The game had a dubious start for Manheim Twp. The Blue Streaks fumbled away the opening kick and set up CD East with excellent field position. The Township D set the tone early by not allowing a first down and turned away the Panthers. The first quarter then settled into a hard fought, ground, pound defense dominated quarter.

The second quarter started much like the first. Midway through the quarter CD East put together a drive into Township territory. A strip by Sam Emge was scooped by Bryce Casey and the game turned in that one moment. It was 7-0 with 6:03 left in the half.

Things began to click on offense for the rest of the half for both teams. The Blue Streaks next possession was a sustained drive that stalled in the CD Est end. Jack Rodenberger booted through a 30 yarder and it was 10-0 Township with a little over a minute in the half.

The Township field goal brought out a major sense of points urgency to CD East. A good kick off return set up good field position. Two quick first downs got the Panthers in scoring range. A 37 yard field goal by Hossom Aly made the score at halftime Manheim Twp. 10 CD East 3.

The Manheim Township defense started the second half like they played in the first half. Very tenacious and swarming. Now the Offense began to click. A nice sustained drive on their first possession of the second half resulted in a QB Kirk to Brett Mann pitch and catch. 17-3 Blue Streaks with 3:41 left in the third and that’s how the third quarter ended.
This game was far from over and the fourth quarter proved to be very exciting. The Panthers made things very interesting when backup QB Sophomore Jeremiah Green took a QB draw in from the 10 early in the 4th.

Township returned the favor by putting together a good drive of their own The Blue Streaks moved the ball in scoring range. Attempting to punch the ball into the end zone, they fumbled into the end zone, it was then recovered by the Panthers and they had new life.

Again the Township defense would come up big. The Blue Streaks held the Panthers last gasp drives in check the last minutes of the game to preserve the win.
