Jimmy DeWire is about as good a lineman as you’ll find. His 6’2.5″ 270 pound frame doesn’t match the effort and ability he shows on the football field. Though the offers from P5 schools didn’t come through, he did receive interest and was offered by Stonehill and SHU. He chose the Pioneers and made that commitment known on Tuesday via a post on X.
His Head Coach, Dave Heckard, says Jimmy is “about an inch short of being a p5 kid. Technique and football IQ are above the line. I had a college coach tell me he’s never been able to get a player to talk line play like him. Our offensive line coach , Dave Payne, is top notch. Jimmy is the leader of our offensive line. A 4.0 student. His technique is flawless. I think he can make an immediate impact for Sacred Heart”.
We caught up with Jimmy to ask about his choice:
PFN: Why did you choose to commit to them before your Sr season?
When I visited campus, it felt like home. They are investing into their football program and school, and look out for their players. All the coaches seemed great and felt like a place I could play at.
PFN: Who was your biggest influence there. , who recruited you?
Coach Saporito, he is their receivers coach and our area recruiter. He was who offered me, and was open to me and my family. Coach Tiernan is their offensive line coach, and is also great. I felt like we were able to get along and he toured me around SHU.
PFN: What are they getting in player like you?
An intelligent football player, who knows and can play each position on the offensive line at a high level. I am a hard worker on the field, as well as in the classroom. I am coachable and can pick up on things quick, and I am a great teammate.
PFN: What was the recruiting process like for you?
Slow, until Sacred Heart offered me, after that it picked up a little and got a few more offers. At the end of the day though, I felt that SHU was the right fit for me, and they saw the potential in me first. Which is what lead me to committing.
PFN: Do you know what you’d like to study?
I’m torn between Political Science and Sports Management
PFN: What role did your parents play in your decision?
They played a role by taking me to campuses to visit, but other than that they wanted me to choose where I would play/study for 4-5 years. I obviously wanted to be in driving distance for them though, so they could see me play and could come visit. I also wanted to see where it would be cheapest to go to, which ended up being SHU.
PFN: What do you think is the most exciting thing about the program?
How much they are investing into their football program, as well as the teams they play against. They play a very competitive FCS schedule.
PFN: What are you most looking forward to while playing for them?
The opportunity to grow as a person and player. I’m also excited to play at the highest level competition, and meet new friends and teammates.
PFN: Tell everyone out there in the football world something they’d never know about you until you told them:
I am an offensive lineman who skis and loves it.
PFN: Who is the person who most influenced you in your football career?
My dad played football throughout his life, and got me into playing. At first I hated it, but once he coached me throughout little league football I felt a love for it, and stuck with it up to this point.
Why do you play football?
I play football for the ability to be violent on the field and not get in trouble for it. I also love the life lessons you learn from football and meeting new people. The bond you make on your team with your teammates is something that you cannot replicate. You need to be able to rely on each other…that is something I also love about football.
What would you do to improve the recruiting process?
Try and build relationships during my junior season and before, rather than after. Even if you don’t have the ideal size if your a good player and build the proper relationships with coaches, then it could help.
PFN: What is it you’d like all your high school teammates and fans to know about your decision that you might have a hard time saying in person?
Even though Sacred Heart is far away, it felt like home and I couldn’t be more excited to start this new chapter of my life after high school.
